Kala was humming some song she had stuck in her head while she bent down to check on the cookies she was baking, the oven's heat warming her face before it got hot enough that she reeled back and brushed the mass of curls away before they stuck to the sweat starting to bead on her forehead. There was a mess spread out over the counters, pieces of broken egg shells, a smear of what looked like melted chocolate and white flour lay in splotches or streaks. The mixing bowl looked like it had survived the slaughter of a thousand and one chocolate chips and the batter, well the batter had a slightly darker golden brown hue to it than was normal. Heavens only knew what Kala had made, hopefully it would be edible.

One thing was certain, the house elves has their work cut out for them. She wiggled out of her sweater, tossing it aside onto a chair before fixing the plain gray tee she wore underneath and grabbed a sponge, determined to actually do a little bit of cleaning before the boys entered and saw the destruction. No kitchen should ever house Kala Faraji, the girl was a menace on a day she thought she could do it and a complete catastrophe on bad days when she got frustrated at her inability to make something as easy as cookies.. or even hotcakes. She brushed the hair back out of her face as she scrubbed the counter with the back of her hand, smearing flour over her cheek. There was a darker spot of chocolate somewhere between the crease of her nostril and cheek, and a piece of eggshell clung to her curls. All of this went unnoticed as she got to work.

The timer on the counter went off just as Kala was elbow deep in water at the sink and she dropped what she was doing, drying her hands on her jeans - obviously - before turning off the timer and grabbing a glove. She pulled the cookie tray out of the oven and set it on a cooling rack; pressing her lips together and twisting them to the side as she looked at the cookies she'd baked. Some looked golden brown and liquid while others had goopey chocolate chips dripping off the sides and sizzling on the tray. And yet almost the rest of the batch was a very, dark, dark brown and when she poked them with a fork - they revealed themselves to be hard. If she kept poking at them the fork tines would probably break off.

Hopefully the really watery and raw looking ones would harden a little bit while they cooled, maybe that's what it was. She needed to let them cool off so they could finish cooking. That was a thing, right? Her home ex professor had said something about that, right? It was cooking logic, of course. She had nothing to worry about. She picked one up, tilting her head at the strange thing, it was sort of shaped like the teddy bears she wanted to make? If teddy bear cookies had strange shaped heads, blob bodies that blended with arms and legs, and eyes that looked either in opposite direction, or one was a lazy eye, or completely white! "They're kind of cute? For... fallout survivors, I guess..."

Using a spatula, Kala scooped up the thick, hard, dark brown cookies off the tray and put them on a plate; poking at them again with the corner of the spatula. She heard a pair of voices heading her direction and non-nonchalantly pushed the still cooling goopey things out of sight leaving only her wonderful chocolate chip cookie display for when Athelstan and Brydon walked in. "Hey guys, fancy a snack? I made cookies... and toffee, but the toffee is still cooling." Sweetly, Kala pushed the plate forward expectantly. "Think I got it right this time."

It was an unwritten rule that most best friends shared everything - and some best friends took sharing just a little further on some days. Athelstan and Brydon might be exactly that kind of friends that took sharing to a new level, yet it also meant that the friends they had overlapped and they could spend time in larger groups without any jealousy drama or the awkwardness of one not knowing the other. Kala Faraji was definitely one of their touching points - and Stan regretted his choice of words for his thoughts for a moment, because it made his mind wander to cuddle sessions he spent with with Bry and Kala. Although what the taller boy and him did on some days could not be called cuddling. Fortunately, the snake was too busy with imagining all those - potentially deadly - things their friend would create for them, which was why the three of them were going to meet in the kitchens today.

There was something oddly comforting about the kitchens, although Athelstan could never pinpoint what it was. Some time in his third year back at Durmstrang, he had started to experiment with food in their kitchens at home, most likely during a weekend when the children had been unsupervised apart from the house elves that were in the Munns’ service, their parents busy with work. He had been hungry, the food that had been served had not been after his tastes - please, he was not going to eat duck ever - and so he had tried to prepare food for himself. What had started as a one-time action had become a habit, with Archibald always being his first victim when it came to new creations, no matter how bad they might taste. Eventually, it was exactly why he was friends with Kala - both of them enjoyed cooking and baking, and yet their skills were questionable.

“You need to watch out for the spider legs and froggy eyes she might mix in there,” he joked, gently nudging Brydon with his elbow as they walked along the corridor towards the kitchens. Stan could’ve sworn the scent of baked goods - though slightly burned - had already tickled his nose for a second. Grinning brightly at his best friend, he walked towards the portrait of the fruit basket with the usual, confident swagger in his steps. He shivered a little, as May proved itself a lot less warmer than the boy liked it. But within the kitchens, it was always warm and cosy, thanks to the herds and ovens that were most likely always occupied. Athelstan reached out and tickled the pea, watching the door swing open and bluntly ignoring the two house elves that passed his way as he walked in. Having been born and raised within a strictly pureblood household, he had also learned to ignore lower creatures unless he required their service - although he secretly thought that eating cookies served by the elves would be a little less of Russian roulette than eating Kala’s goods.

The snake’s face brightened as his dark eyes fell on the girl, and he walked around the table and completely ignored the plate just to throw his arms around her and squeezing her as a greeting. “Aw Kala-dear, so much effort just for us,” he hummed before finally letting go again and letting his gaze wander over the cookies she was presenting to the boys. Without a second of hesitation, he grabbed one of them and winked at Kala. “Oh yes, surely you did try my recipe,” he said meaningfully - making sure it was a joke to confuse Brydon before holding the cookie towards his best friend with a raised brow. “Here, try!”

One of the best parts of friendship was when there was zero jealousy and awkwardness, even when sometimes friendships turned into something just a little bit more. Brydon was glad that this was the case when he spent time with his best mate and the girl that had somehow ended up being Athelstan's kitchen partner more often than not. Neither Kala nor Stan mentioned the fact that other times, they would only meet in a par and they would do something else that did not include cooking or flour or any sort of cooking at all. Today the cooking part was involved, however, which meant that the lion was probably the guinea pig of the three as usual and he would need to be careful of what he put in his mouth. Although Stan did not usually give him things that would harm him; there was the fact that neither of two cooking friends were the best, despite their efforts.

His grin met Stan's as they walked down the corridors together. How he had come to have friends that enjoyed the kitchens was beyond Brydon's scope of comprehension. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy doing these things, but it was the mess that it made all around that bothered the boy slightly. He had grown up in a far too clean house and although he had gotten better over the years, especially since Athelstan had claimed the best friend title sometime fifth year, he still had the lingering feeling that something bad was going to happen when things were not neat and tidy. Of course this was a fairly ridiculous notion, but at the same time, it struck the lion just the same.

Fingers slid into the pockets of his jeans as he watched his friend tickle the fruit to let them in the kitchens and ducked under the archway in order to get into the kitchens. At 6'3", he was probably one of the tallest students, even surpassing the snake that was found by his side in that area by a couple of inches. He didn't pay any mind to the houseelves that were around; there was not going to be one like the one that had lived at his father's mansion anyways. The was only one elf in all of his life that Bry had considered to be worth talking to - it had been the one that had made sure he had food and water during some of his more extended 'punishments' as a child. But these were not things that were on the lion's mind as his grin matched his friends and he greated Kala, "Love, you've got flour all over you." He winked, looking to the display of cookies and toffee that she mentioned.

Brydon reached hesitantly for the cookie in his mate's fingers. One one hand, if it was the boy's recipe, at least it was somewhat better than what Kala usually did. His lips pursed and he looked to either of them before deciding to hell with it all and taking a bite. What was the worst that was going to happen, anyways? It was only a moment before the pieces of whatever that thing was came back out all over the floor as Brydon started to choke it back up. Why was there a hint of pepper in a cookie. And had that been an egg shell or the frog eyes that Stan had warned him about? "You guys poisoned me," he gasped, making a face at them both as he tossed the cookie on the counter and went in search of some water or something to get the horrible taste from his mouth. Maybe he needed to rethink this whole friend thing, after all.

"You guys are my favorites" she purred, returning Athelstan's hug and squeeze with a wide and bright grin. Her entire demeanor had lit up as she saw the two walking towards her, wanting to lean lazily against the counter and just watch their movements for the rest of time if possible. There were plenty of things they did separately and somehow Kala had a sneaking suspicion that her friends did other things that didn't include her, but didn't find that she was either disturbed or jealous of whatever they had going on. Her favorite days were spent in lazy company, acting as a barrier between them when they sprawled out and did absolutely nothing and everything all at once. "My ears were ringing, what were you saying about me now?"

There was definitely bound to be some kind of commentary on her cooking if she knew Athelstan at all, then it was practically a given. Grinning, Kala used the sleeve of her sweater to wipe some of the flour off her face and only managed to wipe half and smear the rest. She shrugged and rolled the sleeve back up, leaning carelessly against the counter; the house elves would take care of her clothing and she still probably looked good covered in flour. As long as she didn't get egg all over her clothes and smelled like said eggs, then Kala was okay with Stan and Brydon seeing her look a bit like a slob. After all, chances were that Athelstan had seen her dolled up enough times to last him a lifetime. "Down to the last chocolate chip eyeball."

Kala moved to lean against Athelstan, eyes glittering as she leaned forward a bit to watch Brydon who was being offered a cookie. Her lips were still fairly curved, expecting something amusing to happen at the expense of one of her friends. The chuckle was low and full of mirth as Brydon bit into the cookie, seemed to gag and then accused them both of trying to poison him. Kala gasped, looking mildly shocked and hurt that he would say such a thing. "Poison you? You're accusing sweet, innocent, handsome Athelstan of trying to poison you?" Kala pouted mockingly, completely joking before she burst out into a soft chuckle "and sweet innocent moi? I'd never hurt a fly, least of all you, Brydon."

Truth be told she'd probably swat a fly or two away, but they probably knew that. Gingerly, Kala hopped onto a stool and placed her chin in her hands, grinning. "What were you two up to, hmm? You looked particularly cozy coming in." Grabbing the "toffee" tray, Kala poked at what she hoped had gone from goop to hardened cookie-candy-thing and was pleasantly surprised when it had. "Fine then, if you think it tastes so bad, make you make something." she said to Brydon, turning to look at him, glancing askance at Athelstan.

"How's your handsome brother? Still single?" Kala waggled her eyebrows at Athelstan.

It was sometimes so easy to feel absolutely loved and adored, and it seemed like there was something naturally charming about Athelstan that drew people towards him, without him doing as much as throwing them a smile. At home, his siblings were the ones showering him in love - even his sisters who were so neglecting towards Archibald. At Hogwarts, he had Archie of course - but he also had his friends who were doting on him, giving him hugs and smooches and sometimes just a little more. There were few places in the world where Stan had to face dislike or hate, and he had to admit that he found the whole situation rather enjoyable - and who wouldn’t, while he had a cute girl purring at him? This was way better than dealing with cats, after all - he fortunately wasn’t allergic to pretty girls. And boys, for that matter. His attention was currently caught by Kala’s doings, given she was being absolutely adorable while smearing the flour Brydon had commented on even more over her pretty face instead of removing it.

A part of him was almost disappointed as Brydon took the cookie from him with his fingers instead of letting him feed the lion - which did sound more adventurous than it actually was when worded like this, as Athelstan doubted Bry would bite him. Then again, underneath two glamour charms, there was the evidence that Brydon had bitten him like a misguided vampire, but Stan really tried not to think too much about it. He rather watched his friend together with Kala, barely capable of hiding a smirk at the taller boy’s reaction. Kala was famous for her little, well, let’s call it experiments in the kitchen, and Stan adored her for it, as their behaviours when dealing with food were the same.

Clutching his chest in mock horror, the snake tried to keep a straight face as he stated: “Right, how can you accuse sweet, innocent, handsome Athelstan of poisoning you? And even sweeter and more innocent Kala?” But then he had to snort, shaking his head a little. “That’s why you have to sniff food before eating it.” Wasn’t the slightly burned scent prominent enough around them, like the kind of bad perfume muggles often used when riding public transport devices? Trains were a horror Stan wanted to relive as little as possible. As Kala moved towards a stool, the younger Munn boy dropped himself on top of one of the worktops, without a care that his jeans might get covered in flour, too.

You looked particularly cozy coming in. For the endurance of several seconds, Stan froze, eyes widening slightly as he gazed at Brydon, then quickly gained back control over his facial features and laughed at the girl. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” He was glad for the switch of topic, clapping his hands and pointing at Bry. “Yes, you go make something, Bry. We watch!” His head was turned around at Kala’s words, raising a brow at her. “What’s your business with my brother, mh? Of course he’s still single, he will die a virgin,” he announced, but there was still a wary, protective edge in his words as he gazed at her.

"Of course we're your favorites, love. Who doesn't love us in Hogwarts?" He winked again at Kala, as he reached for the cookie from Stan, fingers brushing lightly and his chocolate eyes glancing to them as a spark of remembrance came from their activities the prior evening. They were well versed in practicing covering up their extra spent time together - not that Brydon was going to dwell on these thoughts at the moment. He had a cookie to eat after all. Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies were one of his weakness' though he hadn't had them as much as other children, magical or not, had experienced them. Especially not from a smiling mother. His had been almost as secret as the boy next to him was, being brought to him by Clank, the only house-elf that had ever bothered to be nice to him in his father's home.

In hindsight, eating the cookie that Stan had offered him was a bad idea by the smell that was lingering in the kitchens alone. He should've know that by now the two friends that he had were not good at cooking; why was it always he that was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt? Choking softly, the lion ignored the smirks and laughter as he ducked his head under the faucet and drank greedily at the water. When did manners exactly matter, anyhow? The water did make it slightly better, but somehow, the young man had a feeling that this was Stan's way of getting back at him for leaving the bite mark hidden behind glamour charms the night before. Wiping his lips off on the back of his hand, Brydon moved to rejoin his friends at the counter, draping an arm around Kala in a gentle squeeze.

The lion had made no comment or notice of his friends mocking him as he had run to the sink to drink the water and get rid of the peppery and sooty taste that should not be found in a cookie, but now his brain was catching up with the conversation. "You two are horrible," he muttered, shifting next to the two. "Seriously, this place is a mess. Don't either of you know what a washcloth is?" His chocolate eyes skimmed the mess on the counters, internally cringing at the fact that his best friend would have flour all over him because of the fact that he had jumped up on the counter to sit.

"I'll remember the sniff trick." A lopsided grin was directed in the snake's direction, laughing softly. "And that the fact that my friends apparently hate me, even if they are sweet and innocent." Chocolate eyes could not deny the fact that he had lingered over Stan's body for a longer moment and his jaw set as Kala made the comment about them looking cozy together. An alarm set off in his head and the young man shifted, using his free hand to wipe the flour from the lioness's cheek with another grin before gesturing to Stan, "Really, you think that twit would fit in a bed with me? He wishes, 'cause he knows my kisses are so damn good." Laughing, Bry reached out to gently squeeze Stan's neck, playfully knocking him a bit as he did, nudging his leg and his long fingers resting just above where they both knew that glamour charm was hiding things briefly before he pulled away. He let the subject change as he looked between the two, deciding not to make comments about his best friend's older brother.

Kala snorted and grinned at Athelstan’s mock horror and his over the top dramatics at being insulted, it was one of the things she loved about the boy; he took what he needed to seriously but the rest was definitely up for mockery and fun. There were plenty of things she loved about him, but this had to be number one on her list if ever she made one. “To be fair I could have charmed it to smell like nothing,” she quirked a brow, displaying that cat ate the canary smile of hers as she lazily drew a heart in the flower on the counter. “You’re going to leave ass-prints on the counter, Stan.” It mattered about as little to her as it did to him, but she was chuckling softly at the thought of a house elf coming to clean that up, grumbling to itself the entire time. “Maybe you should sign it for your adoring fans, the house elves.”

From the look on Athelstan’s face when she’d made that comment about them looking cozy, it could have meant a plethora of things and it hadn’t even crossed her mind that there could be secrets her friends were keeping from her; at least not the kind of secrets she was starting to think about now. Kala’s grin was lazy as Athelstan laughed, thinking she detected a sound of something hidden between its baritone. For a tiny second it had become high-pitched, just gone above its normal octave into a lightly higher pitch in sound; but it could have been a high pitched nervous laughter with the way it stuck in her memory. She didn’t push it, they were moving onto Brydon cooking for them. Kala had to admit that doing all of that baking had worked up an appetite and hoped that Brydon could dazzle as well as teach them how it was done.

Ignoring the heart she had been tracing over and over, Kala’s face turned upwards and she nipped at Brydon’s jaw when his arm went around her shoulders, briefly ignoring the protective edge to Athelston’s tone when she’d inquired about his brother. “Excuse you, I shower with a loofaevery day; nothing so rough as a washcloth,” she smirked and tipped her head to glance over at Athelstan, following Brydon’s lingering gaze. Curiouser and Curiouser. “We should test that theory at some point, how many people can fit in Brydon’s bed at the same time.” she announced, watching their interaction for a moment longer. If there was something there, she’d wait and see; it would do her good to be around whatever it was. Already she was searching for signs of it. Would she find it in their natural gestures? In the way that Athelstan would laugh, the way that Brydon’s eyes lingered?

She wasn’t certain, but she was always looking for it. Trying to understand it. Wanting to be near it.

It was too soon to be thinking of such things, it could all very well be hopeful thinking. Merlin only knew what types of friendships boys had, there was no reason to read too much into anything right now. So, she moved onto the next thing.

“I probably just want to fix that virginity of his, make sure he dies knowing glory.” she smiled so that Athelstan would know that she was joking, there was nothing Kala wanted with Archibald Munn at the moment; “I’m just asking Stan. It’s been a while since I’ve talked to him and the last time I heard there was a whole army of girls after him. Just curious to see if he finally picked one. Pretty sure you’re keeping him on his toes. So… I’m hungry, what are you making for us, Bry?”

The air between the three friends had changed, almost as if Kala know that there was so much more to them. Maybe she had noticed before, but it was becoming more pronounced the more time they spent together. Athelstan did not know, and he did not allow himself to think too much about all those things, because they could not be anyway. He was not going to ruin a perfectly fine friendship with something as stupid as a crush - if it even was one. Stan could still blame the alcohol for all of this, for the inner turmoil and the way goosebumps covered his arms as soon as Brydon looked at - or worse, touched - him. “Oh Kala, a pretty lady like you really shouldn’t use such crude words like ass,” he scolded her mockingly, shuffling around on the worktop to enhance the imprints he was going to leave there, because everything was covered in flour, egg remains and dough - all of this was going to be stuck to Stan’s backside afterwards, but he had always been one to live in the moment and think little about the kind of consequences that did not put the Munn name at risk.

The boy’s coolness was ruined for a moment as Brydon’s hand landed on his neck, almost making him gasp. Instead, his body just tensed up for a second, while he still hoped Kala did not realise it. It was so much easier to join in on the lion’s joke that was a whole lot more true than Athelstan wanted it to be. “I like the idea. We can make it an experiment and just keep piling up people in his bed - that means, unless you mean how many can lie there comfortably. So many factors to consider if you think about it!” he announced, almost desperately trying to derail all of this, even though he felt like he was making it all worse. When had the topic changed from cookies to Bry’s bed? He couldn’t quite trace it back, but it was driving him just a little mad. Focusing on Archibald was easier, especially as his brother senses were tingling, rising all guards against the intruder, even though it was a cute intruder in this case.

“You should be with someone who’s more willing, please don’t scare him and stay away from Archie and his virginity. I wouldn’t know how to explain his sudden death to my family, I fear,” he teased her, nudging the girl softly with his elbow. It was always odd to see people showing interest in his brother - not because Archibald wasn’t attractive, but more because the older Munn boy seemed to have little interest in other people. He would most likely marry a box of tea and live happily ever after - if their life would only be as easy. “And who might these girls be, I need to pass him a list so he can pick one,” Stan added with a wink and a smirk, quite convinced he would never do such a thing, as he generally did not do anything that made his brother deliberately uncomfortable.

Brydon still hadn’t replied to their increasingly insistent demand to make them food, but then again Athelstan was not so sure if his best friend had any remarkable skills in the kitchen. Not that it could be any worse than what Kala had been doing, leave alone Stan’s own cooking disasters that were generously fed to his friends and his brother. He let his legs swing gently back and forth as his dark gaze fell back on the lion beside him. “I think after such sweetness, we need something more salty, so surprise us,” he kept cheering on Bry, clapping his hands together and slowly stretching his arms out in front of him.

His chocolate brown eyes watched Stan, fingers flexing on the other boy's neck before the hand fell away. He knew the affect he was having on himself by touching the snake, let alone what Athelstan might be feeling by receiving the touch. It was not worth the risk in the kitchen with Kala watching them with growing interest. Interest that Bry wasn't exactly sure had started, but was clearly there just the same. His body turned to the girl that he still had an arm around and he leaned down, not giving a response or time for her to see his face, kissing her gently and squeezing her shoulder for a moment before finally pulling away again because Stan had taken the golden opportunity to keep the conversation flowing to turn it around and end the spotlight on their relationship and become protective of his older brother.

This wasn't something new for Brydon - it was clear that his best friend cherished his relationship with both his father and his older brother - in fact, it was the reason that nighttime activities stayed nighttime ones and the daytime ones stayed daytime ones. There was no crossing the bridge, no matter how much or little either boy might want to. The Munn's were a highly respected family in the wizarding world, there would be no such thing and not married a pureblood girl with a just as highly respected name. The Wilkins' family was the same in this, as far as anyone knew - the difference being that the father of the boy in the kitchens would be rotting away in Azkaban for a very long time and Bry had not quite decided if he would follow the demand to marry a girl or not.

The lion didn't speak as he slid away from his two friends talking about the eldest Munn son and looked around the kitchens, biting his lip, debating where to begin. The requests of his cooking were in high demand today and this had never happened before. His friends did not know that there was a closet chef behind the fact that he usually let them tear apart the kitchen. The truth was that Brydon had learned how to cook a few things for himself at a young age when house-elves had been demanded not to cook for him.

Shifting around, he put a pot of water on the stove and then within a few more moments, started to clean up the mess around the counters and the kitchen that Kala had left - it was certainly going to drive him crazy if he had to keep working around the mess. In all reality, the lion was surprised that this situation had not come up before, that this was the first time that they wanted him to try his hand at something when they were both so terrible in the kitchen. "You can have spicy," Bry glanced over his shoulder to his friends, "But not salty. Come on, help me find some counter space to be able to chop up onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and peppers. I have a pretty mean spaghetti sauce you may like." His words flowed as an order and he winked at them both, grinning a little bit. Maybe the lion could be just as bossy in the day as he was at night?

It was all innocence and play when Kala batted her eyelashes innocently at Stan for chiding her about her language. “Sorry mother” she crooned, grinning up at him while her fingers found a curl and twisted it around the digit, pulled it back and let it spring loose only to bounce against the side of her face. She was the picture of innocence and malice, eyes narrowing in thought as once again her fingers found the same curl and coiled it about thoughtfully. “Definitely how many fit comfortably, between you and Bry you’d take up more than half the bed if you lie on your backs. If you spoon, I can curl up at the foot of the bed.” She purred, mischief clear in her tone as she deliberately used that specific choice of words given the strange atmosphere switching on and off between the two.

Kala’s laughter rang out as Stan defended Archie from her advances, it was sweet that he was worried about her being with someone so unwilling. This wasn’t a problem for the Griffyndor and she pouted prettily when he warned her away from Archie altogether. The knowledge that Stan was protective of Archibald Munn was nothing new, she’d been visiting the Munn estate for dinners considering the professions of their families and had not once made any sort of move on either boy. Stan’s friendship meant quite a lot to her and she wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that if she could help it. “I can’t promise that. I’m dying to know how fluffy his hair is and how he manages to keep it that way. But if you help me uncover his secrets… I just might get you that list.” She winked, then turned to look at Brydon who seemed to be having an existential crisis with the mess she’d made of the kitchen.

Kala bit her lower lip, coughing to hide the laugh at the look on his face and instead rose smoothly. “Yes sir!” Giving him a mock salute Kala picked up a single rag and moved it out of the way as if that was all she was going to do, but she picked up a cleaner rag and started wiping the counter down; swiping a finger through some of the powdery flower and reaching up to draw half a heart on Athelstan’s cheek. “Did you know Bry hates messes?” sometimes when they were actually doing some studying and Kala left her books and parchment sprawled all over the place she would catch Brydon trying to arrange them discreetly. It amused her to no end to leave things here and there for him to find and fuss over when he thought she wasn’t watching.

Sliding her finger through the flower again before wiping everything – but where Stand had been sitting – clean, Kala slid her way towards Bryson where he stood by the counters and drew a half heart on his cheek, opposite to that of Stan’s. Smirking, Kala rose on the tips of her toes and nipped at Brydon’s chin before sauntering off to fetch the onions and tomatoes at least. “I feel oddly domesticated, and like I can definitely cook the noodles this time.” The question was whether they would let her try or not, those poor fallout teddy bears would probably have scarred some first year for life with their half melted faces and crazy eyes.

Athelstan thoughtfully tapped one finger against his chin, a calloused fingertip meeting the shade of stubble that was barely worth a mention as he glanced at Kala, mischief sparking in his dark eyes. “What if she spoon with you in between?” he suggested helpfully, winking at his friend because the mental image he was currently having was too good to give it away again already. In a way, he really entertained the thought to spoon up in Brydon’s best with his two closest friends, while at the same time, he could easily erase one factor in this calculation and still be as happy as before. But that was the problem, right? He could have group hugs with Kala and fancy dances with the lioness, yet he could not have Bry all for himself, even if they ever decided to follow their jokes and run away. Too much was at stake, too much of a reputation, too many traditions and too much of everything. Stan did not enjoy such mind games - they gave him the kind of stomachache that came from nervousness only.

While he really did not want to appear patronising towards Archibald, he could not fight down these instincts that made him want to jump Kala’s face whenever she started with his brother. It was not like he did not want them to be close, or that he would really mind her taking any step towards Archie - it was merely the knowledge that his brother would not appreciate such a thing that made him protect the older boy with teeth and claws if he had to. “I can sneak into the bathroom and see what shampoo he used, I guess it’s something particularly manly - or baby shampoo. Everyone fucking loves baby shampoo,” the snake announced, stretching his arms over his head for a moment until he could hear a satisfying plop in his shoulders. He had found out about the perks of baby shampoo when he had found a leftover bottle that somehow - blame magic - had not expired when he had been looking for shampoo in their bathroom at home. Never before had his hair been as soft and awesome as that day - he might as well use it every day now!

Only the sudden commanding tone of Brydon’s voice ripped him out of his thoughts, and Stan glanced at his best friend for a moment before simply staying where he was. He was not going to say that Kala did do a good job at cleaning because that was sexist and no one wanted this - but he left it to more skilled hands to do such work while he had a tendency to create a bigger mess whenever he was trying to clean something up. “I don’t think he hates all messes,” Stan stated mysteriously, raising a brow at the boy before giggling because Kala’s flour-covered finger tickled on his cheek as she drew half a heart on his skin. “But Kala, it wasn’t my shower day today, you’re ruining my routine,” he complained playfully - and yet he left the heart where it was.

The boy let his legs dangle as he watched the only girl in their little troop walk towards Brydon only to draw the other half of the heart on the lion’s cheek - and the nip on his chin was what caused Stan’s heart to jump uncomfortably for a moment before he just smiled it. “I bet you’d manage to burn the water,” he teased Kala, reaching for one of the maimed cookies and holding it upwards before intonating with a low and creepy voice: “Give me your firstborn chiiiiild, Kalaaaa.”

As the two were bust taking jabs at one another, Brydon's rag swept up the flour dust and into piles so that it could be wiped away in another moment. He rinsed his rag and took a glance over his left shoulder just in time to see the fact that Kala drew a heart on the cheek of his best friend. It should not have caused the stomach clenching that it did and the young man forced his eyes away, brow furrowed and taking a forceful breath before turning off the water of the sink and continuing on his journey to clear the kitchen counter. Once done, he pulled out the onions, peppers and tomatoes from various places around the kitchen, eyeing a house elf that came to ask, "Is sir sure that we can't be of any help?" Brydon snorted, eyeing his two friends before shaking his head. "No thanks."

Sure, the lion had grown up in a house where there was elves, but he didn't take them for granted. Too often the boy had been told not to be fed by the elves and there was one in particular that had probably saved his life a time or two - or at least, the ache that clamored in his stomach. It was not things that Brydon spoke about, but at the same time, the young man felt a bit of respect towards the creatures that worked hard to take care of everyone and everything, up to par for sometimes impossible standards. "Who says I don't like messes?" he asked, grinning at the two once more, throwing the rag at Stan's head. It would serve him right.

In truth, the lion was caught on the fact that Stan had mentioned the baby shampoo, on top of the idea of three snuggling in his bed. It was forbidden for Brydon to linger on the fact that he loved the way that Athelstan's hair smelled, or that the snugglepile in his bed would be very nice indeed. It was these things that Brydon made sure that his thoughts stayed away from, even when there were other parts of him that desired to linger on them even more. Fingers found a knife from the block on the counter and he raised it up, looking to Kala. "I don't trust you anymore. Even with simple things like water and noodles. You can sit there and look pretty I suppose, since you two clearly aren't earning your dinner by cleaning." He smirked at the other two, "Maybe the favors will have to happen in bed, after all."

It was a dangerous game; but not one that hadn't been played before. His fingers roamed the tomatoes, then the peppers, before Brydon added noodles to a pot that was starting to boil. It was all good fun between friends, after all - there was nothing more or less to the fact that the three of them all enjoyed their times together. "As if you'd know what to do with a child, Stanman," he commented, brown eyes on the vegetables and fingers forcing the knife through them time and time again.

Kala smiled up at Athelstan as her features softened with his proposal. The image was a pleasant one, three individual and very different factors gathered in one shared feeling; connecting to become one sole entity. She did not envy the dream for what it was, only enjoyed the comfort that radiated from it. Even if she had not been included in such a thing the lioness would not have been angry or hurt. Stan and Brydon could spoon and she would have been fine at the foot of the bed, in her own space. Or even settled in a big comfy chair looking out the window with a warm cup of tea. Lazy afternoons were her favorite part of the day, and an evening spent mulling over things while staring at the stars wasn’t half bad either. “I’ll think about it.” The reply neither committed her to such a thing nor did it nullify it. Should it ever happen Kala enjoyed knowing she would have an option in the matter.

Casting a glance over her shoulder in Stan’s direction as he commented about sneaking into Archie’s bathroom and seeing what shampoo he used amused her. Deciding that she should probably let him be and not give him too much grief about Archie was the best option she nodded with a smile. “Done. You get me the secret to his fluffy hairdo and I’ll be content forever.” Chances were it probably wasn’t even the doing of a shampoo, if such a thing existed then the Munn boy would definitely have a weapon in his arsenal that hundreds would kill for. After all, who didn’t want to have hair that felt like clouds the way she imagined Archibald Munn’s did?

Somehow she managed to look incredulous and offended at Stan’s comment about her managing to burn the water. “Excuse me, Mr. Munn… but I will have you know I have learned to boil water in your absence.” The lioness gave a small playful huff but her mirth was quickly erased at Brydon’s next words. Her hands stilled from their task, the only sign that what he had said had been cause enough for pause. ”Kala, you are not expected to be of actual use to anyone. You are expected to sit and look proper, speak when spoken to regardless of what you think you can manage to do.” The lioness was aware that Brydon hadn’t meant it the way her mother – the way Sabra had meant the words to hit home; but they had simply caught her off-guard and her face darkened for a brief moment as she turned to look over at Brydon.

A vicious quip about his parents danced on the tip of her tongue, but she swallowed that venom because it wasn’t right and he hadn’t meant to hurt her. It was just small pet peeve and it was so easy to slide under that mask. Surely they would notice the small quirk had she had the chance to execute her façade; but Stan toying with her cookies seemed to be the diffusing factor and the lioness remembered that her friends wouldn’t hurt her intentionally. They might all someday react out of anger, she was not so naïve to think that the two boys didn’t hold a single mean bone in their bodies; but tonight wasn’t that night.

“Fine, but when I become a great cook you’ll be sorry,” she laughed instead, glad that she hadn’t reacted angrily or impulsively as she went to sit next to Stan on the counter and leaned against the boy. Glad for his presence and his radiating warmth. Laughter erupted from her at his cookie monster voice, “and what will you give me in return for my firstborn?" To Brydon she said, "I don't know Bry... he deals with you pretty well on a daily basis."

It was almost funny how fastidiously Brydon was cleaning the worktops and handling vegetables, while he simply did not seem to be the kind of boy who had any remarkable cooking skills. On the other hand, neither did Stan - and his brother could testify that every time he entered their kitchen in the Munn manor, chaos was left behind. He never cleaned his own messes and left it to the house elves whose presence was generally ignored - no one cared about them, after all. Stan usually ignored them, because they had always been around, ever since he could remember. They did all the duties wizards and witches had no time for to bother with, and that was their task in this world - a safe place in slavery, and yet only few bothered with it. They were creatures, worth less than any of them in this room - but those were thoughts Stan kept to himself, because he did not have to share the views and opinions that had been hammered into him for years.

The thought of the three of them snuggling up in bed was a pleasant one, and Stan did not even have any more lecherous thoughts. He liked hugs and kisses, liked lying down without a care and enjoying the exchange of affections - even more so when they came from his two closests friends. The fact that Kala did not exactly disagree made him smirk, all together with the deal he now had with her. Never had he seen Archie’s hair as exceptionally fluffy, but if she thought so - each their own, as the saying went so clearly. A mental note of ruffling his brother’s hair was taken, before Stan snorted at the girl’s mock-offence over her cooking skills. “Are you sure? I wouldn’t bet on your water-cooking talents, you know. No offence, darling.”

“Our good looks make us deserving of dinner by nature,” the snake remarked and casually swung his arm around Kala’s shoulders, kissing the top of her head in a strictly platonic way before grinning at his best friend over her head. He was not sure if he liked the dance on the tightrope the three of them were currently practising, his expression changing for a moment to something darker and less amused. Only the other boy’s question dragged him out of the seconds of stupor, and he shrugged carelessly, “I’d give it a cute haircut and teach him how to feed ducks - that’s what you do with a child, right?” Honestly, he had never thought about such things, even though he knew he was expected to marry and procreate one day. The Munn lineage needed to continue, and still Athelstan could not imagine himself with a child in his arms. He was too young for such things.

Stan laughed at Kala and shook his head, single dark curls falling into his face before they were carelessly brushed away again. “No, no. That’s not how a deal with firstborn children works. You get nothing in return - I mean, I’d have to change the diapers so you’re clearly the winner in this,” the boy explained, before he bit off the head of the cookie monstrosity he had been waving around, chewing with an audible crunch because they surely had been in the oven longer than necessary. Surprisingly enough, they tasted way better than they looked, and a short, satisfied moan escaped the boy’s lips. Words were not needed - and he did not want to rain down crumbs on his friends, anyway.

Soon, the smells of sauces simmering in the pan as well as the vegetables filled the air as Brydon moved with ease around the kitchen, looking for various things here or there. The laughter of his fiends was refreshing in the fact that they could all have a moment of getting along and having fun. The raining comments and gestures in the end meant nothing other than that the three of them were close and could get away with such jokes and images without serious consequences. His lips were curved into that easy smile as he stirred things at the stove and looked over to the lioness as he spoke, noticing the pause that she had, the way that his words threw her off guard - he would have to remember that something was there next time. He started to close the distance between them before the girl moved to Stan on the counter. It was just as well, in the end, as something popped and needed tending to on the stove.

Turning the heat lower on the pan that held the vegetables and the sauce, the young man dumped a hefty amount of noodles into the pot that was boiling water and then moved to the island where his friends were, shifting to sit on one of the bar stools. His fingers brushed Kala's arm, giving her a glance of an apology before his chocolate eyes settled on Stan, laughing at his ideas on how to take care of small children. Not that Brydon had any idea how to take care of one. His eyebrow lifted at the comment that the lioness made but the lion did not response - he knew that somewhere in there, he probalby deserved the snarkiness after the moment that he had caused her.

"You're welcome to finish up the meal," he replied instead, looking to the lioness, giving her another smile. "By all means." Furrowing his eyebrows at his best friend as he turned to the snake, his eyes flickered from the boy's neck and mouth where the sound had come from to the cookies on the counter that were still being displayed. "How the hell did you find a decent one? This just confirms the fact that you guys really did want to poison me. Some friends I have." Brydon declared these things even as his brown eyes searched over the cookies, trying to find one that looked halfway decent.

Was it that the young man was that gullible or that hey was actually going to try another one? The lion wasn't sure he wanted to as he pushed back the stool onto two legs and shifted a bit, his fingers holding onto the counter as he leaned back. Reaching up, he brushed a smug of flour from Stan's cheek, unable to resist - hopeful the lioness had turned away. If not, well, it was nothing that Brydon wouldn't have done for her, either. "You'd spoil a child rotten, Stan. Completely rotten, just the way that you are."

Forest green eyes crinkled at the corners and her nose scrunched up to wrinkle partially along the bridge at Stan’s comment about her cooking before she set her chin on his shoulder with a smile. “No offence taken. I hope you can take losing just as gracefully as I can take your criticism when I prove you wrong though.” It was a happy chirp of challenge, one that would more than likely never take place once they left the kitchens. She would probably remember it at some random point in time and it would only cause her to smile at the memory; but the actual challenge might never truly take place.

Brydon’s movements alerted the lioness to his approaching presence and she followed his movements with her eyes as Athelstan crunched away at the cookie. The soft breath of her chuckle might have tickled the side of his neck soon after he moaned in what she hoped was delight. If Athelstan had baked the teddy bear cookies she would have tried them too, though it wasn’t a sure thing that she would have even pretended to like them. Being able to freely express herself – or at least to a more freeing degree than with her parents – was one of the greatest joys Kala could experience. Currently she could only experience it with the two boys as it had proven difficult to make female friends given her station and the vindictiveness of most pureblood debutantes.

As Brydon settled on a stool and Athelstan made comments about how he would raise his children, Kala thought about how easily their meeting had transitioned into what their relationship now was; and she was aware of how easily it could have been broken or altered. She was lost in nostalgia when she felt the soft caress of skin brushing skin. Tension she hadn’t known had settled in her stomach loosened at the brush of Brydon’s fingers against her arm. Kala turned towards him and offered him a slow spreading smile, signaling that he had been forgiven for something he hadn’t known he’d done. Warmth settled where she’d felt that prickle of anxiety and it spread throughout her body in a manner that had her entire skeleton melting into the comfort the presence of these two boys always radiated. Perhaps the smile she’d given him could take off the sting of her words in regards to his person. Brydon was capable of being childish but that did not make him a childish boy. “You finish it, I don’t want to shame Stan with my cooking prowess by proving him wrong.” A light jest, an offer of peace between them. An unnecessary truce.

Her attention shifted as Brydon’s gaze was directed to the cookies and she turned away from Athelstan, eyes narrowing as her fingers danced along the air uncertainly. She wanted proof that there might edible things in that batch, but at the same time she didn’t want to risk having a stomach ache. Stomach aches had been known to happen quickly after eating some of Athelstan’s food and she hated them because they made her particularly cranky. “It must be Munn luck. I also think you put too much stock on aesthetic, Brydon. You see, Stan picked up the ugliest of the bunch and it turned out to be a tasty little morsel.” Finally her fingers settled on a choice of her own, but when raising the cookie in question the look on Kala’s face was uncertain. Taking a bite would certainly be a bit of a gamble. Even she wasn’t adventurous enough to eat her own cooking, but worst case scenario; she could wash it down with Brydon’s cooking – which was starting to make her mouth water.

The lioness bit into the cookie and immediately regretted it as the taste of salt and sugar battled one another against her taste buds. Her teeth ached from the hardness of the cookie and had clicked together right after the bite. Chewing was ineffective as the baked dough sat like a rock-hard lump against her tongue. Kala schooled her features to keep her brow from crinkling and a hand from clamping over her mouth; sucking it up, she swallowed the disgusting bite. Lips pursed afterwards as she studied the leftover cookie between her fingers. “I think it needs a pinch less of salt next time.” In the wake of the disgusting cookie she’d forgotten about her “future” firstborn child and the contract with Stan.

Usually, Stan was not around while food was prepared, unless he was the one to try and prepare the food himself. Archibald always fell victim to his creations, and the house elves back in their manor had to clean up the mess before anyone else saw what the boy had been doing. Watching Brydon work around the pots and plates was almost soothing to watch, and Athelstan was just a tad jealous that his friend had such skills he would never acquire because a Munn simply did not have to know how to cook - it was enough to know how to kill the animal they were about to eat and how to gut it, unbothered by how it would be prepared in the end. He could not even fathom whether his best friend had been using meat in whatever he was cooking, but he did catch sight of the noodles - and every dish that contained noodles was a good one, it was a wisdom everyone knew by heart.

“Ohhhh, do you think we did secret markings on the poisoned ones we were going to feed you, while the others were perfectly fine? What a truly Slytherin-esque plan of us that would have been. Brydon, you are tearing my heart apart with such accusations!” Athelstan exclaimed dramatically, his feet kicking against the kitchen worktop he was sitting on while he threw his arm in the air. But then he grinned, reaching out to brush the cookie crumbs away from his mouth. It was hard to focus on the sweet flavours on his tongue while the kitchens were filled with spicier scents that promised a wholesome meal once it was all done cooking. The Munn boy’s eyes widened a little as Bry’s fingers brushed over his cheek, but then he winked at his friend - slowly becoming more daring, no matter if Kala was watching them or not.

Still, the snake turned his head and his shoulder nudged the one of the girl beside him as he grinned almost wolfishly at her. “Is that a cooking challenge? I accept the glove you so carelessly tossed at me. Kala, baby, prepare to go down and beg for your dear life!” There was indeed a certain streak for drama running in the young man’s veins when he was speaking to his friends, but here, he felt at home - almost as much as he did with his brother. In a way, he was naively oblivious to whatever was going on between his friends - and even if he knew it, he was not going to mention it, just like he hoped Kala wouldn’t mention if she ever caught up on the slightest tension between him and Brydon. Instead, Stan just laughed along at the bickering between them, feeling that this was just another moment he wanted to capture. Pureblood friendships broke all too fast, no matter if those who were involved wanted to or not. It was a dance on a tightrope, and each of them could easily be tipped off balance.

“Who would’ve thought your baking massacre had a moral in the end? True beauty lies within? Or no, better: don’t judge a book by its cover, give it a lick first!” With a wide grin, Athelstan munched away the remains of his cookie, careless about the fact he was having dessert before the actual meal. Hazel eyes settled on Kala as she finally dared trying her own cookies, laughing at her face before he petted her arm. “Poor you, shall we get some wine to match Bry’s exquisite cooking?” Swiftly he jumped off the worktop, brushing deliberately against the lion before he took out his wand and muttered the right incantations to make plates and cutlery fly towards the table in the kitchens, followed by glass - and a bottle of wine that landed in his hand. It took him by surprise and he almost dropped it, trying to disguise the shock by turning around and waving it at his friend. “I’m a fucking genius, just admit it already.”

It was these two people that the lion loved the most in the world, even if he loved the other just a little more than the other. It was the times like these that he cherished the friendship the three of them had grown to have, with Bry himself somehow being the one not to bicker less or the other two to team up on him and poison him with their cooking. It wasn't as though he could cook much better than they could anyways. Spaghetti was hardly a meal that one could be proud of and the lion was not doing anything special for it other than throwing in some vegetables and meat with the sauce to mix with the noodles.

Once he made sure that Kala was okay - for whatever it was that had passed between them had certainly happened - and that Stan did not have flour on his cheek, the lion returned to the counter, shifting his body and dancing, calling out, "Time to be the grand master chef." His stirring spoon went to his mouth like a microphone, the lion joking and laughing; just like that, all was right in the world once more with the laughter from all three of them mixing through the air just as much as the smell of all of the things that were simmering on the stove. Athelstan had shot him a wink as the eyes of the lioness were away and even if Brydon was not going to share it with anyone, a piece of him was walking on cloud nine.

The snake went on to challenge the lioness to a match that was bound to end with Brydon being told to be the judge - or rather the guinea pig for whatever it was that they made so that things could be fair. It was a system that worked and in a way, made it so that it was the lion that was in the middle of his two friends. Getting things off the stove and to the counter to mix the parts all together, Brydon's fingers stilled as the snake purposely bumped into them and his gaze flickered to the smaller boy, his brown eyes darkening for the briefest of moments.

"Will you be careful with that?" he groaned as his best friend nearly dropped the bottle of wine. "It'd be a pity if you wasted all that goodness on your shirt or the floor." Brydon waved the spatula at him with a grin, turning to Kala. "Now you, love get to be my taste tester for once. If you're lucky, I haven't returned the favor after that cookie you gave me earlier." There was nothing wrong with the meal of course, since he also wanted to eat it, but maybe he could worry the two even for the briefest of moments.

"My little Munnster, I would never throw a glow down carelessly. And I would never beg." Kala laughed at Athelstan's antics with the freedom of someone who was used to his insinuations leading nowhere. Kala did suspect that he would best her in their cooking duel, however, seeing as how Stan was far more capable of producing something a bit more edible than the she-lion. It would have been rather like a Slytherin to scheme something as complex as marking certain edible cookies to differentiate from others, but they weren't that set on poisoning Brydon. The boy simply didn't have lady luck on his side when it came to the cooking of his snake friend and his fellow lion. "I think I'd much prefer to do the hunting than the cooking," she mused.

Athelstan munched away at the cookie and Kala tossed hers across the room and right into the kitchen sink, feeling rather proud of herself for that dainty, girly throw. With Stan's spot now vacated on the small island, Kala leaned back and propped on her elbows; content to let the boys do the work for now. She watched as Stan worked to set up the table, conjuring up plates and cutlery with a flick of his wand and a mumbling of words. The wine bottle had Kala raising a brow and sitting up at the same time, chuckling at how convenient the entire thing had been. She hopped gingerly off the small island and danced her way towards Athelstan, planting a soft kiss to his boysih cheek. "You, my love, are a true Einstein."

Watching Brydon at work opened up new parts of him that Kala had never seen before. The kitchens seemed to be working its magic on the trip as they danced about one another, never touching but always just grazing against those hidden surfaces. It was a warm place to be for the Faraji witch, seeing her friends move about in a gravitational push and pull as their bodies brushed against one another, making a single point of contact before being repelled. There was still something there that she had never seen before, something that had changed between them. Their paths were intersection, lingering for just a few moments longer; like they were magnets. Brydon's words had Kala blinking the imagined attraction away, her eyes danced over their set plates and wine glasses. "Something's missing."

Fingers found their way to her wand, pulling it free she flicked it and with little air taps had red napkins dancing and twirling through the air towards them. She said something under her breath but focused on the image in her head and the napkins complied, their folds intersecting as one by one they grew red stems and fell like petals on a spring breeze into a goblet that had floated out in front of them. Soon enough they had a bouquet of red roses made of blood red napkins settled at the center of their table. The lioness was eager to try Brydon's food, it certainly smelled and looked better than anything Kala could have made even after a lifetime's worth of cooking lessons. "Let's eat before this meal gets cold," she said, the elation clear in the tone of her voice and the vibrancy with which her eyes glittered as they settled first on Stan and then on Brydon.
