Attached to the door of the Ancient Mythology classroom was a large notice. Written atop the parchment in black, flowy script were the words:

Class is on the grounds today!
Look for the giant maze.
-Professor R.

Josephine circled the large, spacious hedge maze, flicking her wand to add the final touches. As far as she could tell, everything was in place to make this challenge just difficult enough to be fun. It was just about time for class to start, so the woman made her way around to the entrance - which was facing the front of the castle - and leaned against the opening, watching as the familiar black dots fanned out from the entrance. She exhaled softly, slowly, steeling her nerves. This would be totally fine! Surely they'd like it. Being outside was far better than being stuck in a classroom. As nice as her classroom was.

When it seemed the majority of the students had arrived, she stepped forward with a smile and clasped her hands behind her back. "Good afternoon! Today we're going to have a lesson that is not so typical, but I can assure you that it will still involve ancient mythology. Today, it's specifically greek mythology." Dark eyes surveyed her students, appraising their interest, gauging their feelings. Hopefully she could teach them a thing or two. But instead of mentioning the maze outright, she posed a question instead.

"What would be your ultimate sacrifice for the one you love? I'm not talking about giving up your lunch or passing up the perfect job. I mean... if you had the chance to save them, what would be the most that you'd give up? How far would you go? Think carefully about your answer and then raise your hand. Those who do answer receive house points!"

-------

Josie is teaching. WOO. Please keep your posts relatively short and include a summary at the end. If your character answers the question, you can say that Josephine called on them to speak. For an answer, they will earn one house point. After a few days and/or all students have answered, we'll move on to the maze portion. ;)

When Atticus arrived at the door to the mythology classroom and found a note tacked to it, his heart skipped a beat. Surely she hadn’t canceled the class! It was one he was looking forward to immensely given the subject matter. His Nan had always taught him myths and legends, though her tales were far closer to home as they were centered around the Irish legends of Old. Greek Mythology was no where near his area of expertise. But, thank the gods, it seemed that the class was merely being moved outside! This day was getting better and better!

The Ravenclaw scurried his way down the staircases, skipping the last three at the bottom before he hurried his way outside. A quick glance around had him spotting the large hedge maze and he wandered over to the entrance where Professor Rousseau was lingering. Had she crafted this? It truly was extraordinary to see - something which he happily chirped at her. For several long minutes, he lost himself to studying the greenery. Mazes had always been a soft spot for him. He’d even crafted one himself not — the bandage on his arm itched and Atticus pulled away from the maze, absently rubbing away the thoughts as he turned to listen to his teacher speak.

What would he give up? Is this where someone was supposed to say they would die to save their loved ones? But...what was the point in that? How was dying a brilliant idea when you wouldn’t be around the stay close to the one you loved? Wasn’t that simply trading your heartache for being left alive and alone for their own? What would he give up then, if not his life? Tentatively, the boy raised his hand and, when Professor Rousseau called on him, he swallowed. “If it was possible,” which given the nature of their world he assumed it would be, “I’d...give up my sense of taste…” While it might not have seemed like a grand gesture, for someone like Atticus, whose entire world revolved around tea making and the meshing of favors from different herbs, he offered the one sense that would allow him enjoyment, as well as mastery, of his family’s tradition.

——-
Atticus marvels at his teacher’s handiwork before offering up his answer.

Anora hop-skipped and twirled her way through the halls towards Ancient Mythology, she was actually looking forward to this class considering how it had helped the last time she spoke to Elias. In reality, she was just walking with a bounce in her step, humming happily and carelessly up until she saw the sign on the door. The corner of her lips turned down at first, then she whirled around and headed for the outdoors. If there was one thing she loved it was being out in big open spaces.

Outside she looked around, eyes narrowing in search of the grounds and catching sight of another body moving towards an erupting maze, she recognized Professor R and bounded down the stairs with the same enthusiasm as she had when heading towards the classroom. Her eyes took in the rising maze and she grinned before biting her bottom lip, hoping they would get to go inside and explore.

Of course her attention was pulled by their professor and though the smile didn't vanish, but her excitement certainly doubled; Anora paid close attention but was a little surprised when the question was posed. She bit her lip and furrowed her bro, feeling her shoulders deflate a little and let her classmate answer as she thought about the question. This was probably the worst thing anyone could ask of her, nothing she held had value and she didn't believe in being a martyr. Wasting life impulsively was just that, a waste. She raised her hand after Atticus, venturing her own guess when Professor Rousseau called on her. "My sense of sight..." she couldn't fathom the thought of living without touch, but then again, she'd never see colors again.

It was turning out to be a disturbing but interesting lesson.

Anora's happy to be outside, but disturbed that they're being asked what they would give up for someone they love. And suspicious.

As Elias made his way towards Ancient Mythology, he was soon staring at the tackled note on the door to the classroom. He raised an eyebrow, not quite pleased that he had not been given an advance's notice. While he loved a good hike around the Hogwarts ground, he also preferred to maintain a steady schedule. He glanced at the windows for a moment, staring at the outside world before finally moving away from the door to fall back on the stairs that had led him up the classroom.

When he arrived at the hedges, he immediately moved towards the professor as he was probably late as it was. She seemed nice enough, though. He listened to her question and thought about it. She said she was teaching Greek mythology today. The theme of sacrifice was prevalent in those stories, so perhaps his answer would be based on that? If one only considered Heracles, a good answer would be "my own life", but there were other myths to consider.

"Though I find my answer boring, my answer would have to be 'nothing'. In Greek Mythology, mortals were always trying to defy the gods, but in the end, they would always fail. I'd just accept fate," said Elias. While he noticed Anora was there, he made no attempts to greet her.

----------

Elias answers the question based on his understanding of Greek Mythology.

A maze. Those were always fun. The sight caught the Spaniard's attention as he arrived at the location of that day's Ancient Mythology class, for once not minding having a class outside despite his dislike for Scottish weather...all be for the sake of Mythology. As he listened, he wondered what was it that New Favorite Professor Josie had in mind, thoughts being filled with different myths which made reference to such a scenario. A maze...a maze...King Minos' Labyrith? No, that made no sense, specially when Professor Rousseau was speaking of love and sacrifices of all things. Maybe she had listened to the silent prayer of recreating a sacrifice ritual, that could be fun, though why would they need a maze for that?

At the question, he quirked a brow, considering carefully the answers of his fellow classmates as memories filled his mind. In Greek Mythology, heroes often made great sacrifices in order to achieve that which they most wanted, but things rarely turned out as they expected, for such was the nature of their tragedies. Calmly, he spoke up the moment Professor Josie dearest called his perfect name. "A life, or more importantly, a soul, as those are the only things a mortal has that are of true worth to the eyes of the divine, the only things worthy of being sacrificed in exchange for another's life."

"Something like a hero passing up on a chance at Elysium for the sake of another, you know? It would mean we would never get to see the person we love again, but at least they would be okay, and is that not what truly loving someone is? Willing to give up anything for their sake? Though of course, that's just my opinion on the matter." The lion spoke calmly, shrugging and with a smile, quite the rant, though he certainly did love the sound of his own voice and the sweet melody of his Castilian accent. Had it been another class, he would have given a joking answer, yet Mythology was serious business to Martín, and he had no shame in speaking of things of such deepness. Actually, he didn't have shame for anything to begin with.

Though, was there truly anyone for whom he was willing to give up so much?

---
Mars loves Mythology and Josie is the coolest Professor, okay!? He gives deep and thoughtful answers cause this aint no time for jokes...yet.

Erik Dwight was not a good student - although it was a fact that did not come from a lack of skill, but a natural lack of enthusiasm and motivation to actually study in order to receive good grades. One of the few subjects he actually did care about - next to Ancient Runes, which was a heritage thing more than anything else - was indeed Ancient Mythology. Therefore he was rather bummed to see the mention of a fucking maze when he arrived at the classroom, groaning quietly to himself. He was going to die in class - again - and all that without a single acromantula close by. Life was cruel in many ways, but the boy just sighed as he followed the other students down to the lawns. At least a maze would be hard to miss - the problem was always inside a maze, that much the eagle had learned so far.

Leave it to Professor Rousseau to start a class with a killer question that made Erik’s widen a little, arms crossed and fingernails scratching over the fabric of his robes as he listened to her. What would be your ultimate sacrifice for the one you love? What a personal question to ask, but the Swede decided to listen first before giving an answer by himself, getting a taste for what others would offer - although it did not quite influence the reply he would give in the end.

His thoughts lingered longer on Martín’s answer than necessary, because it came close to what he wanted to say - just less elaborate and more in a fuck it all way of saying things, as Erik did have no patience for waxing poetry about answers in class. Everything, Erik wanted to say - because it was the truth, the total self-sacrificing for whoever he had given his heart to, no matter whether it came to friends, family or an actual lover. “My life,” he replied finally when it was his turn to be called up for an answer - two words with more meaning than necessary attached to it, a thinly veiled confession for having tried and failed. He did not feel like giving any more explanations, as it was not what Professor Rousseau had asked for.

__
Erik savagely gives two-word replies without further explanations. And he does not like mazes at all.

With a name like Njord, named after Njörðr, God of the sea and the oceans, there was little room to wiggle himself free from the ties of ancient mythologies, although he had learned most of it from books he had read himself rather than being told stories by his mother, who had after all chosen this name for him. The tall badger was fascinated by old stories and rituals tied to it, by stories of those who might have walked this earth once and whose bloodlines could still be felt in one descendant or another - if one believed in these things, of course. He took the note that had been pinned on the classroom door with a neutral expression, fingers wrapping around the strap of his bag before he walked down to what could not be mistaken for anything but a maze.

Njord loved few things more than classes that took place outside, where the breeze was carrying over the scents of lake water and growing grass, of the trees around the grounds and the flowers that slowly blossomed in the gardens. The Norwegian inhaled deeply as he walked, joining the group of students that had gathered around Professor Rousseau before she started her class, asking a rather unconventional question instead of explaining what the maze was about. Not that the badger minded, yet he often preferred to listen over boldly speaking up, trying to find the right words for what he would give up for the ones he loved. A lot, of course - himself included - and all his senses if he had to. But it was easily said, and more easily said than done in the end, and the professor had encouraged them to think their answers through before replying.

He then raised his hand, his gentle and pleasant voice buzzing with his accent as usual as he spoke, carefully chosen words weaving into one another. “I would give whatever it takes to save them - there has to be a condition in order to know what can be given to outweigh their life, although another life is indeed the closest and fairest choice.”

_
Njord grew up with a myth attached to his bones and now he replies to the question by stating that there has to be a condition in order to fulfill it, after all.

Truth be told, Quincy couldn't have cared less about Ancient Mythology. Yes he could understand that some people considered the subject to be interesting and all that, but it simply wasn't his cup of tea. What was his cup of tea, anyways? He cared little for most classes and would have rather spent his time taking a nap instead of sitting there in front of that maze. Though, if he had to be completely honest, it was nice to be outside... even if he had been dragged to that class by his boyfriend who seemed rather displeased about the idea of class in a maze. Who could really blame him? Even he lion thought getting lost in a maze was one of the worse things ever and he didn't even have a bad sense of direction. Then again, ending up lost could potentially result fun if it meant avoiding class in favor for doing things which seemed much more entertaining at that moment.

He mused on such matters as he paid little attention to the discussion at hand, something about love and sacrifices and it all seemed too deep and philosophical for a simple Mythology class. Was it always like that? He really didn't want to talk about what kind of things he was willing to give up for those he loved, that seemed way too personal for his liking, and Quincy didn't do personal well. A brow was raised at Erik's answer, staring at his boyfriend in silence. My life. Leave it to the savage to give such a short, matter-of-fact, and almost shocking reply. Except he wasn't really shocked at all, as such an answer did make sense to his mind. Though was his own life really worthy of saving someone else's? He wasn't that much of a great individual at all, even if he knew he would have given it away with no hesitation if it came to saving the people he loved.

At the next answer, he nodded to himself. Yes, that made much more sense than simply stating out what they would give. So, when his turn came, he simply let out a sigh. "Instead of what we're willing to give, shouldn't the question be what they're willing to take? It seems much more logical for an offer to be made and then agreeing to it, instead of simply giving it all away when it might not even save the person in question" he stated calmly.

---
Quincy don't care for mythology but @Erik Dwight dragged him here and how can one say no to the boyfriend? He has very deep answers to give, 'cause he likes to question things and be problematic.

There were few things Artemis loved more than the tales of Ancient Greece -- and not just because of her namesake. She was a slave to the love and the sacrifice, and every terrible little twist. She looked forward to every Greco-Roman lesson so much that despite knowing many of the tales backward and forward, she still opted to refresh her memory in her spare time. Ancient Mythology was one of those few classes she felt compelled to pay attention to, although she very rarely contributed or opened her mouth. When she made her way out to the maze, she didn't expect today to be any different.

Her face was buried deep in her open book, her fingers carefully flipping pages, using the periphery of her vision to guide her to the rest of the class. The chronic daydreamer managed to pry herself out of when the Professor began to speak, though, shutting the book and returning it to her bag. The maze in front of them went completely unaddressed, but Artemis' gaze lingered on it anyway. Mental pictures of picking partners and guiding each other through to the end floated through her head, and a few unconscious glances were sent to the boys who most fit the role of hero in her imagination. But class was moving forward without her, and she struggled to process what the others were saying.

What would they sacrifice for love?

Students were already answering. One boy said nothing and another said my life. Two extreme ends of the spectrum. Artemis had to wonder where she sat. For the sake of love, what would she give up? Knitting her brow, the lioness sank into deep thought, chewing idly on the inside of her cheek as she tried to place herself in the shoe of every heroine she'd ever admired. She'd known false love, but if that love was true, what would she sacrifice? Saying she could give up everything was easy, but the more she thought, the harder the word fought its way up her throat. Her hand rose all on its own, and as it did, her answer escaped.

"Everything." She paused, her chin tilting up as she lowered her hand again. "To save the person I love, I would sacrifice whatever price is asked of me -- even my ability to love." To her, death was far sweeter than saving someone and being unable love them. Such a fate was the fate the young Gryffindor could imagine, but it was still one she would suffer for the sake of love.

--

After some deep thought, Artemis says she is prepared to sacrifice everything for love, even the ability to love. Don't remind her that who she loves changes weekly

Excitement fluttered in the young badger’s stomach as she raced down the stairs, having just viewed the notice that their Ancient Mythology class would take place on the grounds. The note mentioned a maze and Fae couldn’t be more thrilled. Ancient Mythology was one of Fae’s best classes, which was quite an accomplishment because the young girl wasn’t an academic, not even close. But tales and history fascinated her, they made it easier for her to actually focus on the subject being taught and it made her artistic mind wander to places she’d never been before. Some may view it to be unimportant, that whatever had happened in the past was history and had no use of being recollected and discussed, but Fae disagreed. Humans fascinated her and their motives and personal stories even more, motives which were often driven by the mythology and tales of their time. The fact that her parents deemed any class dealing with history to be useless was something she tried to push to the back of her mind.

As she arrived at her destination, she realized that most of her classmates were tall. Tall and beautiful, so beautiful, but mostly tall, which proved to be a disadvantage for the petite girl. She made her way to the front, just in time to hear the Professor ask a rather... disarming question. The young girl didn’t have to think too long, the answer coming almost naturally to her. Wouldn’t a person do anything and everything for their loved ones? Because what good was living without them? To Fae, the world would be a bleak place, colors of gray consuming the once so vibrant ones and sucking all joy and happiness out of the air. She felt a pang of sadness at the thought of having to live in such a way, having to deal with a loss the girl had never dealt with before, causing hot tears to sting at her eyes, tears she hastily blinked away, hoping no one saw the water that was about to spill.

The Hufflepuff listened to her classmates intently as she waited for her turn, most of them giving deep and thoughtful answers. They intrigued her, particularly a student she had never interacted with but heard tales, no, myths, of: Martín Marzán. Her vibrant green eyes were fixed on him, contemplating his words and nodding in agreement. His answer seemed in line with hers, but the way he had brought it made him seem like a poet and a philosopher and suddenly, Fae felt small and insignificant. Intelligence emitted from the students she’d surrounded herself with, making the girl doubt her answer. She’d found it simple, in her mind the words had formed clearly but she wished she had the ability to make it sound deeper. She didn’t, though, so she raised her small hand and spoke when the Professor called on her, trying to keep her voice stable. ‘’I’d give up the biggest thing I have to offer, which is my life.’’

-------

Fae is short, her classmates are tall and pretty and she marvels at them. The question makes her a bit emotional but she manages to answer it anyway, saying she would sacrifice her life.

Tybalt's footfalls were hushed as he padded lazily beside Helene, his tail swishing comfortably behind him, sometimes moving to coil and stroke at his mistress' leg as they made their way down the front steps and towards the rising maze where other students had already gathered. His meow drifted upwards, and Helene looked down offering her pet and companion a smile. "Its exciting to be outside, plenty of field mice for your to catch Tybalt." The book bag bounced against her hip and she had yet to notice that other students had gathered but as she came closer, Helene took the rest of the steps a few at a time, seemingly to glide down with the grace of her house's namesake.

A little ashamed at being perhaps a few seconds late - arriving just as Professor Rousseau posed her question, Helene settled towards the back of the class certain that she'd been spotted regardless of trying to hide behind the taller boys. She'd fess up to it if asked, but if they hadn't noticed it the Raven was not above letting it slide this one time. Beside her, Tybalt came to a halt, his tail coiled around her ankle and his paw rubbing at his face. He licked it and then rubbed a this head, grooming himself while the rest of her classmates answered the professor's question.

Helene looked around, spotting @Atticus Mac Dara at the same time that he answered. She thought of a way to inch closer to her house mate but didn't want to draw attention to herself after being late and waiting for her turn to respond. What would she give for love? The question made her head ache, her jaw set tight as the ghost of the nightmare came to life again. Letting out a soft quiet breath, Helene focused on the question and the maze. Everything about Greek mythology, every legend was about the journey. It demanded you sacrifice everything in the end, whether you want to or not. Helene raised her hand, feeling a little anxious. "I would have already sacrificed everything, before they even asked. You never know what you give up along the way until the very end, the journey strips pieces of you as you go along."

-----
Helene and her cat Tybalt arrive just in time, just barely. She is anxious about this question and even more about her answer.

As he listened to the other students' responses, he yawned. At least the Atticus guy and Anora chick were original with their responses. The answer "everything including my life" was basically repeated over and over again. He wondered how many of the students would actually be able to sacrifice everything they had when it came down to it. Call him cynical, but he doubted even half of them would have been able to do such a selfless feat. For sure, he wouldn't have been able to.

Alston supposed he should have been happy about the turn of events. He was never much of a classroom student; he much preferred the outdoors, so he ought to have been grateful to Professor Josie. For other people, grateful would have meant sitting quietly on his hands and paying attention to class. Unfortunately, Alston never liked following convention, which he found to be made by a bunch of tools. Picking up a weed, he pointed his wand and quietly muttered a spell that transfigured the weed into a dark red rose. Why answer in a boring way when he could bring some life to the class? When it came time for him to answer, he made his way to the center to where Professor Josie was standing.Then, kneeling down on one knee, he produced the rose he had transfigured seconds ago to Professor Josie. Then with his most humble voice, he said "For my most loved one, I'd sacrifice everything I have."

Alston is being an idiot and tries to prank his professor in class.

Noire was more than excited for her Ancient Mythology class. She always loved reading, though unfortunately, reading did not feel the same way. The girl had a hard time focusing when there were too many words. It showed in the way she'd zone out or forget that she was reading entirely. As it was, she failed to notice the paper that was tacked onto the front door. As she walked into the classroom, she smiled brightly. There was no one else in the classroom, so she figured that for once in her life, she was actually decently early to class. That was a good sign. Maybe, she was finally going to get a good grade for once. She took a seat at one of the desks near the front, certain that it would be wise to choose a seat. The reason? If she fell asleep, the professor would be able to notice immediately and wake her up. She didn't want to miss anything!

Noire is an idiot and doesn't realize that the class is taking place outside.

Tristan heaved in a deep breath and stepped forward with his classmates, the Ravenclaw was relatively happy that the class was outside. He did not dislike classes at school but he favored those outside as he can get more chances to capture something with his camera rather than staying inside a classroom with limited sights and sceneries. Not to mention most of the beautiful things he enjoyed taking photographs of where outside. Looking around and spotting a certain Hufflepuff he had met back at the flower maze, he was relieved that someone he knew was there in the sea of different faces he hadn't found interest in or those he had yet to meet.

Camera and book bag strapped to his shoulder he trod closer to the professor in front as she asked the question: 'What would be your ultimate sacrifice for the one you love?'. That was a hard question for the sixth year who had never fallen in love with someone before. He had raised his hand casually for Ms. Rouseau to notice and when he had gotten the approval to speak he answered.

"I would give my life, as cliche as it may sound, but that wouldnae be fair for the one I love to live alone knowin' that they were the reason o' my death. So if my life is to be spared I would rather lose my sight. No matter how beautiful the world is, it wouldnae be as beautiful if the one I love ain' beside me."

~~~
Tristan comes to class and has his camera with him the moment he found out about another maze. He's happy that he knows at least one person in the class which is @Fae Forsythe. He also answers Ms. Rouseau's question.
Why was he doing this again?
Oh right, because he didn't want to take divination or something silly like that. JR blew out a soft breath and finished jogging to the maze where the Mythology students were gathering about. A quick look around told him that he really needed to make friends, because the only one he spotted that might even attempt to talk to him or be nice was Erik - who was next to his boyfriend. Quincy Elkins was definitely not going to be nice to him if he moved towards the eagle, so the lion stayed put right where he was. Liam wasn't around yet; Kiss didn't take this class. At least JR didn't think that she did. It wasn't as if he could call Liam his friend anyways, even if he did come. JR had given up that right long ago.
Shifting from foot to foot, he listened to others answers. Erik's caught him - about the only one that he listened to, if he was honest. The young man had mixed feelings about the question and didn't know exactly what he wanted to answer with, so for the moment, he stayed put and quiet. Green eyes wandered away from the back of the younger boy's head and his fingers tapped against the side of his leg. Erik was probably dying in this maze. He hoped to Merlin that Quincy was helping him through this, but truth be told, it wasn't JR's place. Yet, his heart seemed to overtake his body, since the lion soon found himself inching his way through the crowd of gathered students towards the younger boy. He wouldn't get too close of course, since Quincy was around and probably still hated him, but JR wanted to be there for his friend if need be.
Soon though, it was his turn to share, and the young man's eyes darted around the group of students and back to the professor before finally replying, "Everything." What more could you give than your life the way that Erik was willing to do? Hell, hadn't Mason done that for him and his brother had barely known him? For one of the first times since the previous summer, JR paused, lips pursed as the smells of all the flowers faded away and memories of his deceased brother crept in.
JR needs more friends since Erik's boyfriend hates him. Gives a one word answer as he considers for the first time, the fact that his brother died for him.
Liam raised his eyebrows at the note on the door - just as he noticed movement within the classroom. Pausing, he shifted the strap of his bag on his shoulder and blue eyes wandered into the room to see who was around if the class was outside in the maze. His brow creased before his eyes landed on the girl that he had met in the carnival maze a few days prior. "Hey Winters," he called out, "Class is outside in the maze, this says." Assuming that she was going to follow, he turned away and started to hurry out, because he didn't want to miss the class. It was bad enough that he had forgotten to set his alarm that morning and was nearly late even after skipping breakfast, but now they had to get out to the maze as fast as possible.
Soon, though, the flowery hedges came into view and there was a group of students. The professor had just called out her question and the young man caught the tail end of it. He grimaced at the lion spoke; he definitely knew who was here. His exfriend, JR Zerner was in class today. Was it because he was a prefect now and he needed to keep up apprences? Liam couldn't ever remember him being there before, but he raised his hand, feeling a little snarky as the Professor called on him and replied, "The relationship." After all, hadn't he done that for JR? Hadn't the eagle paid the price and given up his friendship with the lion when the other boy had run away? Liam had certainly done it out of love because if JR ever came back, he knew deep down that he would accept the apology, as long as it was sincere.
She heard Liam's voice.
A confused face turned to meet the blond-haired boy. Had she missed something that important? Well, that certainly explained why she was still the only one in the classroom. She only wished she had realized something was wrong before someone else had to help her out. Nodding, the girl packed her things quickly and followed Liam to the outside. Noticing that a crowd of students had already gathered, she figured that she was actually late and chose to stand next to Liam, quietly thanking him for informing her about the last-minute change in location so that she wouldn't have to miss her first day of class.
When she heard Liam's answer, she blinked. She didn't quite understand what was going on, but something about his answer felt cold. It made her uncomfortable, so she tugged on his sleeve and gave him a look as if to ask "Is something wrong? Is everything okay?" When she was able to think of a suitable answer, she raised her hand. "For me, my connections to people are most important so I'd be willing to never see my friends or family again."
Noire is grateful @Liam Andrews helped her out, but is confused about his answer. She also answers in her typical way.
Renée joined the small pack of students and took a spot near the back. She could clearly hear Professor Rousseau’s question, but between the shuffling robes and the restless leaves on the hedge, it was difficult to hear the softer-spoken students. The 5th year thought carefully as she listened to the other responses. It seemed the general consensus was that they’d give up their own lives. What did it mean to truly love someone outside of the family? Renée had no experience in that matter. Though from what she could imagine, love was a mutual feeling that was shared by two strangers and gradually developed.
Her hand shot straight up, and she waved it in the air so that the professor could see her from behind the heads of the taller students. When Renée was called on, she responded, “I would trade the love they had for me for their life.” The girl made sure to say the words loudly enough so it would carry to the front. Granted, what she chose to sacrifice was not entirely hers, but she thought about the exchange. If she truly loved that person, then the thing she would value the most would not be the love she had for them, but the love they had for her. It seemed a worse fate to remember the feelings she had for her lover while they could remember nothing, than to have them both forget entirely.
Renée responds with what she believes to be an equivalent trade. Since she's in the back Renée doesn't realize @Alston Byrne is in the same class.
Half of the class was insane.
From the back of the small crowd, Evelina watched as person after person described what they were willing to give up. More than a few were ready to give up their lives, and the fourth year had to wonder just how many of them had even been in love before. They were all just students, after all. They'd hardly seen anything of the world, but there was no middle road. The group had become polarised between those that would give nothing and those that would give everything. She was starting to think that Romeo and Juliet was perhaps not quite as far-fetched and whimsical as she originally believed, if so many people were willing to give up so much.
Chewing on the bottom of her lip, the brunette considered her own answer. She'd never known the sort of romantic love so many of her peers were describing, but she did know what it was to love one's family. If she were to wind back time and change things so that her mother could live, it would mean giving up everything she had. It would mean giving up her half-brother and half-sister, and any knowledge of her father. In the end, she would still lose a piece of herself, and she would still lose her family. For all she knew, her mother would have fallen just as ill from some other malady, or simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sacrificing everything was no guarantee of happiness for anybody.
No matter how she looked at it, the question was a selfish one.
Hypothetical like this were a waste of time. There's no point to it. It's not possible. She told herself. We don't have that much control over our loved ones, or what happens to them. It's all out of our hands. Everything's always been out of her hands. All she'd ever been able to control was herself, and even that wasn't a guarantee. But Evie didn't speak up, and her answer was kept to herself. There was no reason to draw attention to herself unless she was specifically asked. Why couldn't the professor just ask for an oral summary of the reading assignments?
--
Evie thinks her classmates are insane, and that there's no point to this question, because it's not possible to save the ones we love from anything, but she doesn't share this with the rest of the class.
Artemis had returned to zoning out while her classmates continued to give the usual, boring answers. None of them were as impressive as her own, in her mind. Sacrificing everything was better than sacrificing one's own life. If you gave up your life you didn't have to suffer through anything; your suffering was over. But Artemis was willing to truly suffer for the sake of true love, even though she had yet to experience it. She supposed her classmates hadn't experienced much of it either, based off of their answers. No one really claimed her interest until one boy confidently declared, I'd sacrifice everything I have.
It wasn't the answer he had given that interested her so, not really. It was the fact that he dropped to one knee, and turned a weed into a beautiful rose. A quiet sigh of longing escaped her lips at the sight of the luscious red blooming from a withered old weed better off in a bin somewhere. He'd made something beautiful out of something ugly, and seeing him offer it up to their professor put a smile on the young Gryffindor's face. That was a true romantic -- a boy worth all sorts of trouble. Not stupid Mark Maxim, the muddy blond that had tricked her into falling for him. The Quidditch star had swept her off of her feet and dumped her twice as fast, and for what? She still didn't know. She could only assume his own insecurities had come into play. Boys who ran around with multiple girls at once usually had all sorts of issues, and as far as she could tell, Mark had wasted very little time getting over her.
That was fine. She was totally over him too. That was why she had sent him an un-Valentine card.
Why should she waste time pining after him when there were so many other boys at Hogwarts anyways? Boys like the one who was down on one knee, offering up a pretty flower to the teacher while declaring that he too would give everything. The poor, lonely souls who kept saying they wouldn't give up anything or saying they'd already given up everything could learn a thing or two from him. A voice from the back distracted her from her musing though -- one that said they'd give up the other person's love for her.
"Is such a thing yours to give?" Artemis asked. "It's supposed to be your biggest sacrifice."
-
Artemis is extremely impressed with @[Alstone Byrne]'s answer and romantic display. She also questions @Renée de Rose d'Argent's answer.
