People said that dreams had meaning, and Ozi wished that he (for all the way that things like palm reading and tarot cards and tea leaves seemed to make sense to him) knew more about what it meant when he dreamt about the same person.

In Korea, Ozi didn't get much sleep -- he seemed to always be tired, and it settled into his skin until he found something with caffeine, or forced himself to keep going, because he had to: he couldn't sleep under bright lights, under the way the floor pounded with the volume of the music scorching the walls of the practice room, and he couldn't sleep under the way everything had to be perfect. But when Ozi did sleep, he had a dream that felt like something he was forgetting, or something that he could never quite reach. And he wondered what it would mean -- if he should pay attention to it -- when it had been following him around for months now.

He dreamt about Sunwoo Seo, another Hufflepuff, but there was never enough for him to know what it was about. And Ozi felt as though searching someone out to tell them that he kept dreaming about them would be strange. So instead, dreams slipped through his fingers like they were woven from the same material as galaxies, soft and silken, and he didn't know how to stop them. Perhaps, he thought, if he kept ignoring them, they might go away. That had never worked for him before, but he didn't know what else he could do. So maybe that was why, now that he had the chance to sleep for as long as he wanted, Ozi was falling into his old habits of forgetting that time existed until someone reminded him that he should sleep, or perhaps just until he sat down somewhere and found himself slipping away.

That was what had happened today, too -- Ozi had come into the theatre, sat down in a plush red chair with his notebook and a pen, and then he had curled up just a little too much and fallen asleep. When he woke up, nothing had changed. The theatre still sat silent and empty, waiting for something more than a sleeping sixth year, but for a moment, he had thought that he was back in Korea all over again, catching minutes worth of sleep in between the way nothing could ever slow down. He thought about sleeping again since the dreams had not come today, or maybe going back to his dormitory so that he could sleep for longer, but...Ozi remembered what he was here for. He caught a glimpse of the piano out of the corner of his eye, and he remembered Mexico's (usual) threats on his life if he didn't learn the music that she gave him, so he set his notebook and his pen down where he had been sitting so that he could swap out the too comfortable chair for the piano's bench. It took him a second to stretch before he sat at the piano, a second to remember what it was that he was playing, a second to rub at his eyes without smudging his eyeliner, and a second of stacking pages of sheet music in front of him and running his fingers over the ivory keys before they settled where they were supposed to.

And then he didn't think about dreams anymore.

Playing the piano always prompted a rush of emotion to wash over Shion like a tsunami, leaving him helplessly drowning in the sweet melody that would sound at the gentle press of a piano key. They were ivory and smooth, and fingertips would glide against the hard surface but it would feel like silk. He had so many memories centred around the dusty old piano in his living room, with the music stand broken and no cover for the keys because the screws had come loose and almost trapped tiny fingers one day. His legs couldn't touch the ground when his father would sit him on the bench next to him and play Dawn by Andrew Lapp or Chopin's Nocturne. For a country boy who spent his childhood working the fields, his father had been so tender with the instrument and the way he played that Shion had immediately asked for lessons; his father tutored those who lived around them for a living, so why couldn't he teach his own son during his breaks? Eichii had been more than happy to show his boy the wonders of the piano though, and it was a skill that Shion treasured for the years to come; it was something very dear to his heart.

It was a way to express himself, for him to be honest with the way he was feeling without possibly risking hurting anybody with a sharp tongue and cruel words. He didn't want to do that. Shion tried his hardest to keep all emotions that could be associated with negativity inside himself, lest he be dubbed a 'Debby Downer' or something equally as devastating. It was only a nickname, but the implications of it hurt more than he would care to admit. Today had been one of those days. There had been an idle, absent-minded and a rather innocent comment that had probably been said as a joke, but it had lingered in the forefront of his mind. He was overthinking. He did that a lot. Shion would hear one thing and that would be all he could think about. Was it about him? Were there other things being said about him behind his back? Usually not, because he was very rarely, if ever, the centre of attention, and he was certain that very people knew his name. Was it wrong of him to be grateful for that? Rather have no recognition than negative, really.

The theatre was somewhere he went to be himself. Despite the nature of the building, he didn't have to wear a mask while he was there. There was no bright smile that was dimming in his eyes, but rather just the quiet whisperings of his heart telling him that this was where he belonged; he loved to play the piano, and he wished he could do it all day. But as he approached the door, the soft sound of music echoed as the door was pushed open slightly, though he remained at the edge, listening for a while. They were... good. Whoever it was, they were certainly an apt player, and Shion couldn't help the smile that crept upon his lips. He loved sharing his hobby with others. Slipping in through the door, he moved slowly towards where the piano lay, with a boy playing on the keys. Though, instead of immediately talking, he took a seat in the red, comfortable chairs, one leg drawn up to his chest and the sleeves of his sweatshirt pushed up to his elbows, revealing red lines caused by fingers scratching at gentle skin far too much and far too often. And once he finished playing, hands moved to clap slowly. "You're awfully good." His voice broke the sudden silence. "Are you self-taught or did you have a teacher?"

The last notes of the song began to fade out of existence, and Ozi was already thinking about playing it through again, what he should mark on the sheet music to help him play it smoother next time, like he was supposed to be playing it. Maybe the second or third time, he could try to sing with it, as if it was simple enough to play and sing at the same time. At least Ozi knew that he could sing it already, that half of the words were already engrained into his head from the number of times he'd listened to it over and over again.

For just a moment -- perhaps because he was still thinking about Sunwoo a little bit, even as he'd been playing -- Ozi had expected to turn around and see the other Hufflepuff there, when he had heard clapping start, and a voice. But Sunwoo wasn't there. Instead, it was a boy sprawled in one of the chairs, someone that Ozi felt as though he should recognise. By now, he should know all the people in his year, but sometimes they all blurred together into intangible colours in the background, and Ozi could never quite pick them apart as well as he could, not when he was gone so frequently, some of the time. And the sudden appearance of someone else startled him a little too, even though this seemed to happen too much to him when he was in Korea: there was never a moment's peace, and even when Ozi slipped off by himself and found somewhere silent to be for a while, someone would inevitably find him anyway. And Ozi didn't mind, maybe because he didn't mind other people.

"Oh," he said, ducking his head a little, "thank you." Even though he and Mexico had a whole Youtube channel together where she forced Ozi to play piano and sing with her, Ozi still did not play piano in front of other people very often. He never had as much time to practise as he wanted, even though when he had free time in Korea and he could find a piano somewhere in the maze of rooms in KQ he was always there picking out the songs that he knew so well. "I'm self-taught...I just play to duet with my friend usually..." He pulled the sleeves of his jumper down over his hands. "Do you play? Uhmm...did you want the piano?" he wanted to know as the silence settled over the theatre like dust from the piano. Inside, he felt a little awkward that he seemed to recognise this boy, but couldn't place a name to his face, but maybe he would remember sooner or later.

Making people uncomfortable was not something that he had ever wanted to do, though sometimes it couldn't be helped. Trust him when Shion Suzuki said he had certainly not meant to make this piano player seemingly freeze in his spot like he had been turned to stone. Maybe not stone. It seemed too crass and undefined for somebody who was so unique as the boy in front of him, or at least, that was what he supposed judging by his clothing and the very way he held himself. Perhaps marble was better suited, sliced into thick chunks and stylised until the perfect figure had been crafted by pinkened fingers and a damp brow. There was the possibility that it was an exaggeration, but it was still a nice thought to have. Though, he knew he shouldn't really refer to people as objects, or at least not to their face, lest they end up getting offended and there was Shion in the precarious situation he had always found himself in; he would be alone. There he was, going on again. Nothing could ever be simple with him, and it would always end up leading him down a spiral of negative thinking.

He could see almost disappointment in the taller boy's eyes, and he pursed his lips - he hadn't meant to disappoint him. The eagle seemed to be doing a lot of things that he didn't mean to do. "Sorry, were you waiting for somebody else?" Had he disturbed some lesson? Feeling the velvety feel on the seats as he picked at the hem of the stitches beneath his fingertips, he hoped he hadn't wrecked anything. Standing up on his bright white socks, and his navy Ravenclaw scarf wrapped loosely around his neck, there was a sheepish, almost embarrassed smile contorting his expression; it didn't look pleasant. He was wringing his hands together, and the almost uncontrollable desire to itch at his forearms and the back of his hands until they were red and raw was making his heart pound like a beating drum. In time. In sequence. Not stopping until there was a climax to the tale being told but there was no tale here. "If you'd like me to leave, so I don't disturb you and your friend, I don't mind." A lie; he really wanted to play and get some of the thoughts in his head out of it.

"You're rather talented." But hadn't he already said that? Shion kept trying to wrack his brains for an answer, but he was coming up with a blank. His palms felt clammy and he felt a little uneasy for a while. He wasn't sure why, though, because it wasn't as if this boy was inherently intimidating in any way that was blatant to the eye. Then again, most people taller than the Ravenclaw were slightly scary, if he thought about it, and that did count for quite a lot of people. He did only stand at five foot and five inches, which was perfectly acceptable, thank-you very much. "Especially if you taught yourself." It was no easy feat to complete, he would admit that. "I was... actually hoping to. But if you're waiting to do a duet with your friend, I don't mind coming back another time." What was with all these lies today, Shion? Shaking his head, he figured at the very least he could do was introduce himself. Finally standing up, socked feet pattered against the hard flooring as he held his hand out to the other boy. There was a hesitant smile. "I'm Shion. It's a pleasure to meet you."

The other boy looked uncomfortable, but Ozi sat quietly and waited until the stream of words came to an end. Ozi did not know what it was like to try and dissipate discomfort with words, because Ozi could only ever retreat inside himself and sink deeper and deeper until there was no way out. That was why he had gotten into so much trouble in primary school -- he retreated until there was nowhere else to go, and then he lashed out at everyone else just to make it stop. And he knew that hadn't changed very much over the years either, but now all Ozi did was take it out on himself, because that was the only person he was angry at, and it caught up with him in purple bruises and dark scabs settling over his fingers, and bright red scratches streaking down his arms. It was only now that his skin was clear, but he had been in Korea since summer started, and he didn't have time to be angry there.

He ducked his head. He didn't think much of his ability to play piano, and that was why he never played it by himself. But the other boy had decided to introduce himself, so Ozi stood up from the piano stool, taking a few steps towards the other boy who held his hand out to him. The name Shion sounded familiar, as if Ozi was supposed to know it by now. But it was a familiar kind of feeling, as if he'd been hearing it over the past few years, and not because his dreams were so tightly wrapped around him that he felt as though he was suffocating. "Ozi," he said, fingers curling around the other boy's hand, "we're in the same year, aren't we?" But at least introductions were always easy for Ozi, because he had been trained into them. They were always the same each time, in the way the voices of his group were caught together, hana dul set!, and in the way Ozi was a little apart from them some of the time, a lone voice with a smile and the exact nuances of how to do it all set in stone, just like second nature to him now.

"It's okay if you want to play," he said to the other boy, stepping away, "my friend doesn't go here. I just have to practise or she'll kill me next time I see her." He smiled again, a little to himself, because even though all Mexico did was tell Ozi what to do, he still loved her. Maybe Ozi was a little too drawn to girls who seemed as though they could kill him, but Ozi had never been afraid of cutting himself on other people's sharpness -- perhaps because he was always cut on the sharp edges of himself instead, caught up in the raw feelings of anger clawing its way through the marrow in his bones and the blood in his veins. He turned around to take his sheet music off the piano, folded it back up neatly into its crisp lines and sharp edges so that he wouldn't lose any of it. "I have to make notes, so really, you can have the piano if you want." Ozi smiled at the other boy, and stepped away from the piano, back to the chair he'd fallen asleep in, curling back into the plush and hoping that he would stay awake this time.

To say that Shion was usually a chatty person would be wrong because he really wasn't. Some many things were usually on his mind that it came close to buckling under the weight like one simple phrase would be the final tipping point that would lead to the Ravenclaw having a breakdown. Oh, how dramatic. But sometimes he did rely on talking to try and diffuse any situation that would be deemed uncomfortable by his own personal opinion. He had interrupted somebody, and he wasn't really sure what to do with himself though. Maybe he should leave. Then again, wouldn't that just draw even more attention to himself? But the name Ozi was familiar. Shion had definitely heard it somewhere, but he just couldn't remember where, until he mentioned that they were in the same year and he supposed it must have been class; he didn't pay much attention during those hours anyway, so it wasn't odd for him to forget a name. Being called a daydreamer all through primary school had only meant that Shion had stayed in his ways, rather than attempting to break the habit. "I think so." Came his quiet voice, and a handshake that was more gentle than firm.

"That's a shame your friend doesn't go here. Maybe you could learn a new piece for her and shock her when you see her again?" He did want to play. He wanted to feel the keys underneath his fingertips so desperately because today had not been a good day. This would be the only thing that would be able to cheer the eagle up without relying too much on those around him. Could Ciprian listen to another day of him being down? Would Daesung be up for comforting him yet another day? Surely this would be getting boring now, having to take care of a sixteen-year-old boy like he was six-years-old instead. It was humiliating. But now with clammy palms, he watched as Ozi went to sit down in the red seats again, almost as if he was withdrawing from the limelight towards the shadows again; it wasn't even that dark. He could still see him, but it felt different. "We could... play a duet, and then you two can play together?" Shion very rarely played in front of other people, let alone people he didn't really know. Standing still for a moment, he took a deep breath, his entire chest filling with air as his socked feet moved across the smooth floor - almost slipping if he was honest - to the piano that was in the centre. The only thing worse would be that there would be a spotlight on him suddenly.

Sitting down was the first step, but he felt like he was immediately back in his element when he caught sight of the glistening ivory. Lips twitching into a smile, the piece the pianist wanted to play was only roughly a minute and a half long, but he had a good memory associated with it. After watching a movie and seeing his mother's reaction to it, he had begged his father to teach him how to play the piece she adored. And once he surprised her by playing it almost perfectly, Eichii had taken Hana's hand and they had danced in their cramped living room to the sound of their son recreating music for them. Shion started midway through the scale. It was one of his favourite sounds to hear, the vibration that the keys would cause that seemingly filled the room with music, and he felt a weight be lifted from his shoulders. This is where he belonged, it must have been.

He caught the movements of Shion sitting down at the piano out of the corner of his eye, and he hoped that the other boy would feel more confident. Ozi wasn't sure whether or not he was too anxious to play while he was there, but he didn't ask; Ozi just focused on his sheet music, and the patterns of the music, waiting.

The English lyrics were printed with the score, tiny black words in capitals. Mexico had picked the English version of the song, because she didn't understand Japanese, and Ozi glanced them over idly. He only understood a little bit of the Japanese words, but he had never seen the words in English. He hummed the notes as he scanned the music to try and find the places where he had faltered, looping circles around them in thin black pen and sifting through his memory to figure it out. Piano was harder than singing, he thought -- Ozi had started singing when he was maybe five or six years old, dragged into it (naturally) by Mexico and her guitar. Ozi could still remember so clearly the first day she'd come up to him and introduced herself, said that they were friends now. And then there was the way that they left the tents behind for an empty spot near a stream that sparkled in the afternoon sun, and how they curled into dry grass for hours with the dull sound of Mexico's guitar and their voices hovering between notes, settling into the highs and lows of the songs.

Now, it was sitting under the skylight in Mexico's room while the sun sank behind the horizon they could not see, and the bright sounds of her guitar wrapped around his voice while he wrapped himself in her sheets. The days when he got to lie around in her room were rarer than he wanted, and he wished that he could apparate already just so that he could be able to spend more time with her instead of only catching her in snatches between Korea and Hogwarts, and only getting a neverending stream of messages when he could finally use the internet again.

He wondered what she was doing right now.

After a few seconds, Shion began to play, and the song opened slowly and grew to fill the room around them, a little soft at first and then settled into itself, for just a short stretch of time until it faded. It had ended so quickly, and Ozi was almost sure that he recognised it, but what did he know about piano music? But Ozi clapped, just like Shion had for him. It was obvious that Shion was the better pianist out of the two of them, and Ozi didn't mind that fact when he could never find it in him to be competitive over anything. "How long have you been playing?" he asked, shifting the pieces of paper in his lap so that they wouldn't all fall to the floor, "that sounded so good."

Playing in front of people was something Shion had always wanted to do, if he ever had the confidence, that was. There had been many a dream where he was playing some sort of massive concert, friends and family in the front row watching on with pride and feeling proud of him, only for his fingers to slip and all of a sudden, he has messed up. Big time. He wouldn't be able to save the performance, and the crowd would start to boo and leave, and his loved ones would be ashamed to even know him, let alone be associated with him. The pianist would let them down, and it was something he had nightmares about. Playing in front of Ozi was obviously different for so many reasons, but that didn't stop the same feelings of trepidation. Would he laugh at him if he messed up? There was a part of Shion that surprisingly thought no, that Ozi didn't seem like the sort of person to laugh at other people's mess ups. Then again, he didn't really know the other boy, did he? They had just learnt each other's names properly today so that probably was not a good sign.

The applause was unexpected and unprecedented, actually shocking the Ravenclaw boy to the point where he had almost tipped out of his seat, though small hands grasping onto the piano had meant the boy had managed to save himself further embarrassment by tumbling onto the floor and looking like a total mess. Oh, who was he kidding? Shion Suzuki was a total mess, through and through, and today would have been no exception. Swallowing, he let out a sheepish laugh, scratching the back of his head as he tried not to take the compliment too seriously. He wouldn't let a few claps go to his head; he was far from a good player. "Since I was four." From whatever age his father could sit him down and Shion could actively participate would be the correct answer. Turning back to the keys, he placed the pads of his fingertips against them again, the cool surface of ivory and ebony sending shockwaves down his spine, as he prepared to play another. He probably should have offered to let Ozi play again, or maybe he should just leave the room completely; he had disturbed the other boy, after all. How rude of him.

Once the second piece had been played, the final note having in the air, Shion got up out of his seat and wandered over to Ozi, socked feet padded against the floor, leaving soft little thumps! as he dud so. "Do you mind me asking what you're working on?" If it was homework, he would offer to help. Yes, the boy came from the notorious 'smart house', even though he wasn't that great in class himself... nor did he really work hard. See, he didn't see the point in working hard for something he didn't enjoy. "Can I help?"

The more Ozi listened to Shion play, the more he wished that he was better at playing piano. He didn't practice as often as he should because he was so caught up in all of the other things that he had to do -- rehearsal, singing, singing, singing, rehearsal, singing, recording, performing, promoting, finally catching up on all the sleep that he'd missed. It was all too busy, blurs trailing past the tips of his fingers, and Ozi could only fit piano into it a few times. When he had the freedom to sit in Mexico's apartment and pick out songs on the keyboard she had, it was easier, but just like in Korea, Ozi didn't have time to improve the way he wanted. Maybe he wanted to be good at piano, in the same way he was good at singing or the same way Shion was good at piano, but he wasn't there yet. He wasn't sure if he would ever be.

The second song that Shion played was just as nice in the way that it filled the theatre. It was slow, a little soft, and Ozi was envious once again; Shion had been playing since he was four, which was longer than Ozi had even been singing. And Ozi knew that he couldn't be good at everything he did, but that couldn't stop him from wishing that he was. It seemed the worst at Hogwarts, where everything else seemed to know just how magic worked, warm and instinctive, but Ozi seemed to be the only one who couldn't do magic, as if he wasn't really supposed to be here. He wasn't even certain, either, of how he got a Hogwarts letter. He didn't know about magic before then, and sometimes it seemed that even six years later, Ozi still didn't know about magic.

He bit his lip, and glanced up from the final page of the sheet music as Shion padded over to him from the piano. It was only then, maybe, that he noticed the other boy wasn't wearing shoes (and he wondered why, but he wouldn't ask) but then Shion asked what he was working on and Ozi pulled a certain seeming smile out of thin air, just like he had been taught to instead. "It's just the song that I was playing -- I'm not very good at piano so I'm just marking what I need to remember for next time..." He shifted the paper across his lap, gathering the pages together so that they were neatly stacked. "Actually, I'm a singer, so I know how to sing it...but it's harder for me to play and sing at the same time," he added, capping his pen and setting it down, "have you heard of this song? It's from a film called Kimi no Na wa that's kind of popular..."

To say Shion wasn't good at the piano would be a blatant lie, not that he was the sort of person to blow his own trumpet, or whatever. But, he did regrettably have to admit that he wasn't a bad pianist. His fingers would brush against the keys, almost like it was what they were made for, and he finally felt like he belonged somewhere. It was no secret to himself that Shion didn't think much of himself. There were many things contributing towards this thought process, though it was unlike him to ever share what was on his mind; he wouldn't place that burden on somebody else. Not somebody he cared about. Telling Ozi that the whole reason he was so good at playing the piano was that it was both a coping mechanism for his anxiety and the only thing in the world he was ever good at sounded too negative, and he didn't want to bring the mood down. It was just a weird day. One that was like his head was filled with cotton and he was walking around like some sort of zombie wandering the hallways with no real purpose. That was just all too true.

"I think you're pretty good," taking a seat next to Ozi, Shion brought his knee up so his heel was resting on the seat and his chin on his kneecap. "Some days I can't get it either." When the beat would just be off, or he couldn't reach his hands fast enough from one side of the scale to the other, and it would all just be one mess. Sometimes, his head would want to bang against the keys until the sound was filling the room; there would be imprints of sharps and flats on his forehead. It wasn't a good look. "I know that film." He had never watched it though. "Maybe..." The cogs were turning in his head, working a mile a minute and it was almost like steam would be coming out of his ears as if he was some sort of machine. "You said you sing, right?" Of course, he had only just mentioned it. The eagle shook his head to himself for a moment. "Well, have you tried singing to somebody else playing the song live before?" Because playing it from a speaker and playing it live were two very different things. Rubbing his bottom lip with the pad of his thumb, he suddenly clicked his fingers. "Why don't you sing as I play, and then we work on building it up? Like, practising one verse, and only moving on until you've completely got it?"
