For nine to ten months a year, Mathilde wished for better weather. Almost every day she’d get up, and see snowy mountaintops or a curtain of rain from her window in the Gryffindor tower. The Scottish weather was even more whimsical than the Belgian one, making it extremely hard to dress for, and even harder to plan outdoor events – a shame, given how beautiful the lake and the garden were. Yet now that summer had finally arrived, and the heat that the highlands had refused for the rest of the year suddenly arrived all at once, it was hard to imagine it had ever been cold. On days like this, the heat was smothering, the sunlight crushing down on one’s skin as if it was as heavy as it was bright. It sucked the air out of the castle, the rooms becoming even stuffier than they had been during the rest of the year. Yes, on days like this, a dreary, bleak, rainy day seemed eons away, impossible to imagine – even though tomorrow could be one. At night, storms rattled the castle’s walls, the lawns illuminated by flashes of lightning, as if the gods themselves were rejecting the heat wave, and had decided to actively fight against it – at least, that’s what some tea leaves were saying in Divination class.

Mats had walked about the castle, suddenly finding herself with too much time on her hands now that her OWL exams were behind her – and she rather preferred not to speculate on how she had done in them until she would hold the report card in her hands. The stuffiness of the castle had ultimately driven her outside, as it had many students, the light breeze that occasionally stroked her skin and bounced her curls as she strolled across the lawns more than welcome. It carried the coolness of the lake, and the scents of the garden. That’s when she knew what she wanted to do, and when she decided that the Culinary Club should come together one more time before they went back home for the summer.

A large, white canopy tent had been set up on the lawns, tables and chairs set out underneath it in its cool shadow – Mats had enlisted the help of some of the castle’s house elves to set it up, not to mention bring the food over, which was set out as a buffet on one long table. There were salads, pastas, fruity desserts, and plenty of appetizers to choose from, and Mathilde was busy setting up the barbeque. The tables were decked with plates, glasses, and cutlery neatly laid out on the cloth napkins, and bottles of water and jugs of juice were present on every table. Mats had barely found place to set down bowls of chips and peanuts – but of course, where there was a will, there was a way. Only a small part of the buffet table was still empty, to leave place for whatever the guests wanted to bring themselves – though this little get-together wasn’t just for Culinary Club members, everyone who wanted to escape the scorching sun and grab a bite was welcome.

Mats threw the first pieces of meat on the barbeque, which sizzled pleasantly. She was wearing a sleeveless red summer’s dress, the hem just reaching her knees, and platform sandals, with a wide-brimmed straw hat with a red bow. If there was anything better than cooking, she thought as she turned the pieces of meat on the barbeque, it was sharing it with other people.

OOC: Welcome to the summer thread for the Culinary/Cooking Club! Mathilde organised a barbeque on the lawns. There’s a canopy tent providing shade, with tables and chairs set out for people to sit, chat and eat. The buffet includes salads, pastas, fruit, appetizers, snacks, barbeque meat… And you can bring something yourself as well!

Everyone is welcome, no sign-ups or membership of the culinary club necessary.

For someone who had been vegetarian since she was merely ten years old, Isidora found herself to be unbothered by the all too familiar scent of meat being grilled on a barbeque. Perhaps it was because, despite her own dietary choices, she wasn’t the stereotypical kind of vegetarian shown on television that went on a full ’meat is murder’ rant when seeing someone eat something like a burger. Or perhaps, more realistically so, it had to do with the fact that she had spent all of her life eating dinner with people who did consume meat on the regular basis, and that having grown up visiting the farmlands that surrounded the Argyris Institute, she truly saw no issue in it all. Plus, honestly speaking, her own choice of becoming a vegetarian had little to do with a lack of desire to eat meat or with a sense of sympathy for the poor creatures, while it did have much more to do with seeking karmic balance. But really, who in the world had time to explain the specific philosophical concepts that lead to Isidora Argyris’ own dietary choices?

Certainly not her, at least not at those moments, as the young witch found herself all too occupied with carrying not one but two food containers to the Culinary Club’s very own BBQ meeting. The first was actually gazpacho, because as Izzy had come to learn last summer: when dealing with a warm day like that one, there was nothing quite as soothing and enjoyable as a cold bowl of gazpacho. The second, on the other hand, contained carefully sliced zucchini, eggplant, and peppers. Because obviously, if she was going to be at a barbeque she couldn’t possibly miss out on some delicious grilled dishes, and – at least in Izzy’s own opinion – veggie burgers were all too overrated. But why was she even bothering with attending that meeting? Well, the obvious answer was because she was member of the Culinary Club, and although Izzy generally had a tendency to not be much of a sociable person, that was supposed to be something she had been trying to work on throughout the school year (and the keyword here is ‘trying’, gals and lads).

Even if she had wanted to skip that meeting – which, if she was being completely honest with herself, she didn’t – it wasn’t as if she had much of an excuse, for her N.E.W.T.s had already ended, and the schedule that was usually packed with studying found itself…uncharacteristically empty. Honestly, it was kind of strange, and the eagle couldn’t wait until she returned home so she actually had something to do with all the freetime she had suddenly gained. But for now, all she could really do was enjoy the time she had left at school, finding herself clad in a large blouse, slip-ons, a boater hat, and shorts – for that was Izzy’s definition of ‘Summer clothes’. And really, not even she could deny how excited she was about all that, because even if it was a barbeque and full of things she could not eat thanks to being vegetarian and all that jazz… she didn’t really care, as it was still exciting to do something like that with the other members of the club. Although, truthfully speaking, it probably had to do with the fact that she had always kind of envied people who got to spend their summers doing things like barbeques and throwing pool parties.

Had she ever even been to a pool party? Not that Izzy could recall, but the idea sounded rather uncomfortable, and not at all as enjoyable as the scene that displayed itself before her as she reached the gathering’s location at the lawns. She didn’t have any particular plans for the event, nor was she really friends with most members of the club. So, instead of approaching anyone, the short eagle made her way straight towards the buffet table, looking over the dishes with an interest that closely resembled scientific curiosity, and not really reaching for anything to on which to snack. Unsurprisingly enough, Mathilde had actually thought of having more than a few salad options for those who didn’t want to just eat meat, and as she carefully set her own containers on the table, Isidora made a mental note to go thank her later on. For, as she saw it, thoughtfulness was always something to be thankful for.

Stells is sleepy so...apologies just in case
Izzy's vegetarian self ain't about that barbecued meat c': So, like a good member of the Culinary Club, she brought gazpacho! And grilled zucchinis! And she's being a total nerd about food at the buffet table while also making a mental note to thank @Mathilde De Clercq for all her work and the variety in that buffet~

A party out of doors with a lot of food and where other food-minded individuals would be located? You didn’t have to invite Kiska twice. As soon as the word had passed that the Culinary Club was having itself a little shindig, the Gryffindor had immediately gotten to work on figure out just what it was she wanted to bring along. Now of course there would be a massive spread already awaiting any guests that decided to join in on the activities, but you didn’t just show up to a party empty-handed. That was downright rude. But what to bring that Mathilde wouldn’t have already thought of? She was the leader of their club for a reason, as the girl certainly knew her way around a kitchen. It was a good thing that there was a massive amount of students and faculty within the castle walls that could come and participate in the consumption of all the goods. For even as she glanced from a window as she passed by, Kiss could plainly see the spread that awaited them all.

Yep, that was definitely her stomach growling.

Her steps felt fairly light as she made her way through the corridors and outdoors, pleased for something that was actually a bit of fun to take up some of her time. Classes had been a necessary evil, catching up in them after her long departure a task that had made her want to scream in frustration more nights than she’d ever thought to keep track of. But it had served as a distraction while her life was returning to normal after having been tossed upside down and sideways in the last several months. And, each day that she got up and out of bed and faced it head on was just another day that helped to get back to that new normal. This positive attitude and outlook wasn’t exactly one that was typical of Kiska, but one that was being embraced as much as it could be. Some days were still more difficult than others, but they were getting there.

Adjusting the hold she had on the rather large tray of apple turnovers, the Gryffindor continued to make her way across the lawns, picking carefully around things like tree roots and rocks that could sneak up on you and send you flying. These turnovers had one purpose today and that was to end up in people’s bellies, not on the ground. Hopefully a lot of people for, as Kiss drew near to the tables, she noticed that there weren’t quite as many people hanging around outside just yet. It was still early, but… Free food should have drawn anyone in! Her expression brightened when she saw a figure she might recognize, taking a second until the person shifted and confirmed her suspicions. Coming over to join her in surveying the table, Kiss gave Izzy a gentle nudge on the arm with her own, offering up a smile to the Ravenclaw.

“There is literally so much food I wouldn’t even know where to begin. What did you bring, and what would you recommend starting with? Because that looks good, that looks good, that looks questionable but also good… We might actually gain a few pounds after leaving here today.”

Kiss is here for the partaaaaay. Or, more accurately, all the food. Food is good. She’s got her apple turnovers and a good attitude and spots @Isidora Argyris to sidle up and talk to.

Jēkabs was good at some things. Cooking was not one of them, so he'd never felt the urge to go to a Culinary Club meeting before. But eating? He was definitely good at that. Being sixteen and an athlete meant he could consume more food than seemed humanly possible, and if the Culinary Club cooked it, well, then it would be delicious. He just had to go to this event he'd heard about.

He had to find something to bring, though; it would be rude to eat up all of their food as if it was free. The only problem was that he was not a chef by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, he could boil his eggs or pasta or potatoes to feed himself, but that was only impressive to spoiled rich kids who never learned to cook. It wouldn't be nice to serve something bad, so he couldn't allow himself to burn anything or mix up sugar and salt. He pondered, and figured it might be safest if he brought something that didn't require heat.

So, when he walked out to the Hogwarts lawn to see the big tent with tables, he carried two full bowls of fresh Scottish strawberries. Impossible to mess that one up! He raised one bowl in greeting when he saw the small group already gathered. The scent of the sizzling barbecue reached his nose, and he inhaled deeply. This was a perfect place to be if you were hungry. He made his way quickly to the empty spot on the table so he could set down his berries, and grabbed a handful of chips and a small bun on his way over to speak to the group, unable to wait for the full meal to be ready.

One of them was immediately recognizable as the Head Girl. She seemed pleasant enough today--happier than he'd ever seen her, in fact. There was a girl he didn't really know too, short, brown-haired, and quiet. He really didn't want to intimidate her by towering over her, so he stood a little back to introduce himself.

"I'm not sure if we've met yet, so I'm Jēkabs," he said, extending a casual hand. "Kiska, I know you've seen me before, but don't worry, I haven't dropped any Dungbombs recently."

He looked over at the girl behind the grill, noting that she seemed alone and he might be able to get some fresh, hot food if he went in that direction. "I think it would be nice to go keep her company while she cooks," he said to the two girls with him, gesturing toward the barbecue. "Want to come with me?"

----

Jēkabs will show up to any event that promises lots of food, even if his cooking skills aren't up to scratch. He introduces himself to @Isidora Argyris and @Kiska Ferdenova, and suggests having @Mathilde De Clercq join in to create a bit more of a party.

Sausages, pork ribs, beef briskets and chicken wings sizzled pleasantly on the barbecue in front of Mathilde while the guests arrived. She greeted everyone with a big smile while continuing to give the barbecue her undivided attention – for now, at least – and occasionally wiping beads of sweat from her forehead. As hot as the day had been so far, the barbecue’s heat doubled it, but good food required some sacrifice, and it was so worth it. The smell that wafted from the barbecue became more tantalizing by the minute, and soon the meat would be done for everyone to enjoy. She flipped a rib and the piece of meat started sizzling all over again. When she was confident that nothing on the barbecue immediately required her attention, and it could continue sizzling on its own for a minute, she allowed herself to look up at the guests that had gathered by the buffet table. Two people from the cooking club had arrived, Izzy and of course Gryffindor head girl Kiska. Mats remembered that Izzy was a vegetarian, and made a mental note to check if the Ravenclaw had enough dishes to choose from. As the cooking club president, she’d tried to keep this in mind and make sure there were veggie options available, but if she was honest it wasn’t her strongest suit. Maybe she should get some pointers from her later. The third guest was a guy Mats didn’t recognise, but the more the merrier, right? If the cooking club could leave people with a good impression (and full bellies) today, Mats would be delighted. They’d certainly have enough food to go around, so Mats had left invitations on the Gryffindor and communal common rooms’ message boards, to let everyone know they were welcome at the cooking club’s barbecue. That must’ve reached some people.

It seemed that all of the guests so far had brought their own dishes, and the buffet was overflowing. Mats couldn’t wait to taste it all, and at the sight of the amount of food that was ready to be served, she wondered if she’d even have place left for the barbecue meat. But who was she kidding, she’d always find more place for good food. Mats turned her attention back to the meat in front of her, which was almost ready, and started humming to herself. “Barbecue, barbecme, barbeceverybody…!” It was a terrible Dutch song but it had become radio famous the summer before, because it was just so catchy. Now Mathilde couldn’t look at a barbecue without that song playing in her head.

The guy, who Mathilde estimated to be older than her, came her way, and she raised her hand in greeting. “Hi! Welcome to the barbecue! I’m Mathilde, president of the cooking club. How’re you likin’ it so far?” Her accent suited her, the sharpness of her t’s and the flatness of her vowels sounding as direct and open as she was. Once she’d opened her mouth, it was hard to imagine ever having expected an English accent from her. She then turned her attention to her fellow cooking club members and made sure to formally greet them too. “Hey Izzy, hey Kiss, good to see you guys again! What did you bring?”

----
Mathilde is cooking, watching the guests arrive, seeing all the food they have with them… and loving all of it. She greets @Jēkabs Smiltiņš when he comes her way, introduces herself, and asks him if he likes the barbecue. She also greets @Isidora Argyris and @Kiska Ferdenova and asks them what they’ve brought.
The song she’s humming is this one lmao.
