Since the moment she arrived at Hogwarts Selene had always thought that it was a dream place. Over the years she discovered that even a perfect place like that castle had its flaws.
One of them? There was no way to be alone, no matter what, you would always be surrounded by people. Not that it was a problem for Selene, she was used to that, due to the fact that she had a sister and they basically did everything together plus she liked being with people. She was quite a friendly person, meaning that she didn't mind talking to anybody, but becoming her friend was a whole other story. She knew very well the difference between acquaintances and friends, who were only those who managed to gain her trust.
Even when she lived in the Muggle word she didn't have a lot of friends, she knew a few people at school, but other than that, her one true friend had always been her sister.

There were days, though, when she wanted to avoid the crowd and just sit all by herself in a corner in order to properly focus on what she was doing. That was one of those days, probably because she was exhausted, she stayed up till late the night before in order to finish that essay on History of Magic she had to handle in that day.
Strangely enough she couldn't find the concentration she needed, not even in her beloved library. She was used to going there when she had to study or just to find a quiet place where she could read peacefully. But there was something she was not okay with that day, maybe it was the amount of people who chose to go to the library that day, she couldn't even find a free desk, or maybe she wasn't just feeling it. Either ways Selene decided to take her books with her and study elsewhere.

The Great Hall was usually full of people during meal times, but Selene found out about a year before that during free periods it was quite empty. Or at least empty enough to try and read one of the books she was carrying with her.
Most of the people went studying in their common rooms or in the library, who wasn't studying went outside to enjoy the warm temperature, a very few people stayed in the Great Hall. Selene saw some guys playing chess, magical chess of course, others practicing spells…
She sit in one of the long tables, she didn't care that it was not where she usually sit during meals, the most quiet one, and she opened one of her book, the one about Charms.
She usually loved Charms, it had always been one of her favourite subjects since the very first year of school.
That day though she just couldn't focus, maybe due the sun that was shining through the big windows, so she started daydreaming.

She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she couldn't notice anything that was happening around her anymore. An earthquake could happen in that exact moment and she probably wouldn't even noticed.

It wasn't unusual for the young man to be shirtless and sweaty, not really. Maybe most of Hogwarts had gotten used to the fact that he was always just finishing up a run that the peers around him no longer gave him funny second glances or extra looks. Or perhaps they did and the lion had stopped noticing. Whatever the case may be, the lion dropped down in the Great Hall with his bag, pulling a water from it. His skin was covered in the beads and he felt one rolling uncomfortably down his back as JR leaned over to pull a water bottle from his bag. It had been a good run; not one of the easiest ones as he had pushed himself in the sun, but a good run. It had helped his focus return and now the young man planned to work on other important tasks.

Piercing green eyes wandered around the students in the great hall, wandering over the students without focusing in on anyone in particular. The cap of the water bottle was unscrewed by nimble fingers and he tilted his head as the young man guzzled half of the bottle in two quick swallows. Wiping his mouth with the back of his free hand, the young man rested his head back against the castle wall. The coolness felt nice on his fevered skin, although the hardness of the stone made him shift slightly. A sigh escaped his lips and the lion could feel his hair sticking to his forehead. He should've gone to shower before flopping here, but the seventh floor seemed so far away at the moment that JR had just decided to flop in the great hall.

Besides. In the matter of an hour or so, it would be dinner time and the lion needed something to feed the growling stomach. Setting his water bottle down, he pulled his wand from his bag and after a couple of quick charms, that the young man mumbled softly, he was fresh enough that at least he didn't look like he needed an immediate shower, even if the lion still could feel the lingering stickiness of the sweat that had evaporated from his skin. Of course there were glamour charms that were still in place over his torso and his back, something that the lion never went without.

It was a ritual to cast them both in the morning when he got up and at night before he went to bed. One might think that with all the charms in his life, that JR had become skilled in casting them Despite the fact that the young man would not be found talking about his skills, the assumption that he was good with charms would be correct. Rather, the lion liked to use his charms knowledge to help other people, usually. Glancing over to the girl a couple feet away from him, it was surprising that she too, was working on Charms, as he pulled a rather thick book from his bag on the subject to read and wait for dinner to come.

“Charms of Defence and Deterrence” by Professor Catullus Sprangle was an enlightening book. Selene looked at the cover of the book still closed in front of her, the gold letters that formed the title written in capital letters, at the center of the page, stood against the dark brownish colour of the cover. That book was rather old, it belonged to her father, from when he attended Hogwarts, years before. The pages were yellowish on the inside and they had this particular smell of old books that the girl loved so much. He hadn't kept a lot from his time at Hogwarts, and most of the things he did keep were in Selene's grandmother house, which was huge and full of treasure from the past. In fact in their house there were only his father's broomstick, he loved Quidditch a lot in his time at Hogwarts, and a few book, which he gladly gave his daughter.
There were a few notes on the pages: her father's hand writing wasn't really clear, but she had always managed to understand it in some way. Those were quite helpful, but the real richness of that book was that it belonged to her father, which made it ten times more important to her than any other volume she could buy at the book store.

During the first year Charms was one of the most fascinating subjects for her. She couldn't wait to swish and flick her wand and by that produce amazing effect like other students older than her were able to do. One of the first spells she learned was the Wand-Lighting charm, she was so happy when she managed to illuminate the tip of the her wand after a lot of attempts in the first lesson about that spell. The only thing she had to do was saying “Lumos” and she had her very own version of what the Muggle called flashlight, it was incredible and very exciting for Selene, who didn't know a thing about magic before going to Hogwarts. Her father was so proud of her when, the summer of her first year, the girl showed him everything she had learned that year.
A lot of years passed since that day, but she still loved Charms as much as she did during the first year, when learning new spells she felt the same thrill she did the first time.

Eventually she opened her book, ready to start reading about whatever that week topic was. Only in that moment, finally waking up from her thoughts, she noticed that she was not alone. A few feet away from her there was a boy, he was about her age, definitely taller than the girl, not that it was difficoult, almost anyone was taller than her and this was something that pissed her off so much.
It took her a few moments to notice that he was shirtless. Not that she had something against being shirtless, but that was for sure quite unussual. Her first consideration was that he was probably quite confident with his body, the second one was that he had probably been running or something like that.
She wasn't sure, but she had a feeling that she had seen the boy before, that was quite possible actually, maybe they had some classes in common. She squinted trying to read his book's title, she found out astonishingly that he was reading something about Charms as well.

“You are studying Charms too, aren't you?” She asked smiling, looking towards the boy, she didn't want to be annoying, but she was a very friendly girl and maybe that could be a chance of starting a new friendship and she of course didn't want to miss it.

Charms was perhaps the only useful skill that the lion had acquired from his egg donor of a mother that he would rather not be like. However, it was she that had started the glamour charms daily on his body starting the summer after fourth year, when they went out into public. Different charms had been used to conceal different parts of pains over the years, from bruises to injuries more severe to the scars that now were on his torso and back. It wasn't that they bothered JR; in a way they reminded him that he had survived, but it other ways, the young man knew that there would be staring and questions if the lion were to go shirtless with the scars showing. There were already the looks that came, but the itchiness of cotton bothered him, just as it had since he was a small boy.

Shifting against the stone of the wall, his eyes moved back to the book that he had pulled from his bag. It was on Charms, but it also told about wandless magic, the theories behind it, why this subject is particular was easier for most wizards or witches to be able to practice wandless magic. Other subjects such as Transfguration, was harder to accomplish wandless magic in. There were times in the last few years where he had wished to be able to do spells without his wand, most of them coming when he was in the middle of an anxiety attack just as when he was with Helene a few weeks prior, but also when he saw a younger student reaching for a book on the top shelf of the library and JR didn't want credit for the good deed of getting up and getting it down for them.

Fingers brushed through the pages of the book, going to the page that he had last left off on. At this point, JR had not found the courage or the practice space to want to try out spells, but most of it was all about researching the subject and trying to know the mechanics behind it. Charms was the only subject that JR ever studied in depth and it showed by his scores in the class compared to the rest of the subjects that he participated in at Hogwarts. Although sometimes it carried, for example, there was certain charms that were used in Defense Against the Dark Arts - which meant that JR took an interest in this as well.

Looking up from the smell of the newness of the book that he had ordered from Flourish and Blotts, the young man gave a smile to the girl that was a few feet from him. "Yeah," he answered, giving a polite smile, "I enjoy reading and learning about them. It seems you do too?" One hand held the book on his knee as he gestured with the other to the cover of her own book that looked significantly more faded than his own. There was a history that came with her copy of the book, unlike the one he held against his leg, which had just been purchased in the last week.

Even when she was studying in the Muggle school she had never been able to select just one favourite subject, she loved learning new things on every single matter. That applied to her studies at Hogwarts as well, she could never choose just one subject she liked the most, that was the reason why every year she took as many classes as she could. As she hadn’t had the chance to know anything about the wizard word during her childhood, she had always felt like she had to kind of keep up on her magical knowledge.
If Selene really were to pick a favourite subject, she would have chosen either Charms or History of Magic, even though she loved many others.
Charms because she felt like it was the one most applicable to her everyday life, the things learned in that class were the one she actually ended up using the most. History of Magic, on the other hand, was one of the most fascinating for her, while it was usually the most hated subject for her classmates.

One of the things she had to get used to do in studying Charms was practicing. She soon found out that she could have written a five thousand words essay on a particular spell and still not be able to do it if she didn’t practice that spell. As her father once told her “practise makes perfect”. He was actually talking about Quidditch and trying to convince her daughter to give it a try, unsuccessfully, but it was a good advice and Selene made sure to keep it in mind when she had hard times in school.
Selene was a very stubborn girl, especially in her early teens, so she was most likely to practice a spell for hours because she decided she had to get it right, that’s how she became quite good at Charms.

She opened her book, she had to turn the pages a few time before finding the chapter she was supposed to be working on. Not too bad, unfortunately she couldn’t practice that spell right there, in the great hall, it might cause damages if she didn’t get it correct, so she decided to start her homework by reading what the book had to say about that spell.
“I do, I love this year’s topic especially” she admitted. That summer she couldn’t help but reading the table of contents, and also a few chapters actually, out of curiosity. That year she was learning about non verbal spells, something she wanted to do since her third or fourth year, when she saw an older student using one.

“Are you interested in any topic in particular?” She asked, curious, wondering if he was just doing his homework or if he was doing any extra curricular study. This last possibility was, as a matter of fact, rather plausible as he claimed to like learning about spells.
She didn’t want to be too annoying or bother him, he was probably there just to quietly study, but she enjoyed talking with someone new and a little talk never killed anybody, right?

It wasn't that JR was overly suspicious of people or that he didn't enjoy conversations with them. These things were not the problem that JR faced when it came to people; in fact, the young man also enjoyed getting to know people more often than not. No, the trouble came when it was time to talk about his own life, because when having a two ways conversation it needed to be exactly that - two ways. It was hard sometimes, for the lion to be brave enough to express his own ideas, thoughts and feelings after the last few years had come about - especially to people that were new to him. If he shared a piece of himself, it could always go a few different ways. The person could be accepting, condescending, or plain out rude.It was the chance that everyone took when expressing who they were.

Yet, it seemed even more difficult to JR; someone that had been bottling these things for a long time. Sure, he had found a safety net with Erik or even Kiss, but at the same time, these were people that had been more vulnerable to him first. After spending years with his mother, it was much easier to hide behind a breastplate that was disguised as a wall around his heart; something that protected and sheltered him, only opening for a few people. JR was aware that he held people at arms length, even when he wanted to know so much more about them. It was not that he was judgmental, either, but rather that he found it easier to open up to people that had already given him reason to; had already exposed themselves to him in a way.

His fingers brushed over the pages of the book in his lap again, idly passing through them, soft bursts of air coming from thumbing through it. The true reason that he was reading charms books lately was that he was inching his way towards learning wandless magic. This was something that wasn't truly a secret; yet JR had not decided if it was something that he wanted the student body - or professors, for that matter, to know. His piercing green eyes watched his fingers for a moment. Lying was unacceptable as well. It always was.

Looking up again, JR gave the girl a warm smile, shifting his body to face her a little bit better. "I found this book to be interesting," he started to respond, still trying to think up an excuse. "The Charms teacher mentioned it in class last month and it sounded interesting." This, at least, was not a lie. The reason that he knew of the book in his hand was because the Professor had mentioned it. Easy Charms for the wizard's hands was the title of the book - at first glance, it was probably a book for younger students, but truthfully, it held different theories and ideas about being able to do wandless magic. "I don't know if it'll help anything, but I've always enjoyed the theory behind Charms."
