Name: Raquel Dowling
Age: 43
Bloodline: Halfblood
Appearance:
Raquel looks like her nieces and nephews: lighter skinned with dark hair and dark eyes. Her skin holds a tan better than them, most of the time. She will dress in a variation of style and color, and is fond of vibrant colors with subtle patterns. She will typically wear sleeveless robes when she’s doing wand work, as it’s easier than accidentally catching herself on fire. Not… that she’s done that or anything…

Personality:
You can tell that Raquel was once a softer person from how guarded she is now. She’s very careful with her heart after her ex-husband left it in shambles long before abandoning her and their two children - their son, Hellion, who preferred to be called Ion, and their daughter, Helen. His abandonment was the catalyst to this change in her, because mothers are made of the strongest stuff on earth: love. So instead of wearing her heartbreak in the open, she mourned in silence, took care of her babies, and helped her family recover from their almost simultaneously occurring tragedies.

She might not have recovered well, but she’s certainly coped with it.

She likes to think that she’s a good mom. She’s put aside opportunities that would’ve been great for her, but not necessarily optimal for her children as they grew up, and avoided uprooting them as much as possible. For a short time, she taught at a magical academy in Rome, apprenticing under a wandmaker there, but eventually she moved on to other teachers before finally settling in a small, cozy wandshop of her own, which would allow her to spend more time with her kids, as well as her close-knit nieces and nephews: her brother Roderick had three (Hensley, Hayley, and Hadleigh), her twin had two (Halcyon and Harlow), and their baby brother Rhys had two (Harper and Hayden), and there was rarely a moment when the children weren’t around each other. Raquel desperately wants to be someone that they can trust to come to with their issues, and not to toot her own horn, she also made their wands.

She discovered a fascination for wandlore and wandmaking when she was young, and pursued it with a passion that her parents had never seen in her before. Being muggle and squib-descended, they sort of got it, but not entirely. All they could do was support her. Wandmaking became her artform, as much as painting or sculpting might’ve been in her younger years. Her wands blend fashionable and functional, each piece a work of art and piece of her heart, while still being a wix’s most valuable tool. Even now that she’s spending more time teaching than she is in her wand shop, she’s still incredibly absorbed by what she does, and as a conservationist, she makes a lot more wands than she initially thought that she might. WHile something she loves, she will admit -not to her daughter, at least- that she uses her craft as a crutch, another excuse beyond her children to keep herself hidden away.

She hasn’t once seriously thought about dating since Sebastian threw them out. Both Ion and Helen have commented that they’ll be out of the house soonish, and they don’t want her to be alone, that it’s okay to move on and try to date again, but she just can’t bring herself to do it. She’s considering getting a kneazle or five, but she’s not really sure what the future holds beyond more work for her. The former Ravenclaw is almost certain that she’s likely to stay at Hogwarts for a few more years, but as for boyfriends, or even maybe a girlfriend? Instructions unclear, got wand stuck in niffler.

Despite her guarded nature, Raquel Dowling is a presence when she steps into a room. Part of that comes from being the only girl in a family of boys who were pretentious, rowdy, and caring. Part of that is that, as a wandmaker and magical theorist, she’s inherently aware of the flow of power in the world and would rather move with it than move against it. She speaks in a way that gets people to listen to her, and it’s very apparent that she’s stood down her demons, unafraid of anyone or anything. Mostly. See, the past can haunt endlessly and, subtly pausing when doors are slammed a little too hard, Raquel knows that better than anyone.

Character Background:
Raquel Astraia Dowling was born to Castor and Abelle two years after her older brother Roderick. Her twin brother, Ronald, followed eleven minutes later, and two years after them, their baby brother Rhys rounded out the family with equally round everything, a chubby little baby. Growing up in a house full of boys taught her a lot. She was never quite quiet or demure, encouraged by her mother to use the voice that God gave her to speak up, claim what was hers, and never let anyone tell her that just because she was a girl, people had the right to take anything from her. She had to be a presence, she learned early, one that made people think twice about thinking she couldn’t do something because she was smaller than her brothers, or because she -unfortunately, according to some voices- was the first daughter, as opposed to the second son.

Growing up, she was as rough and tumble as her brothers, though her infantile magic showed in her being slippery, hard for her brothers and the neighborhood boys to keep a hold of. Still, tomboy as she was, she liked to learn what people considered traditionally feminine pursuits. By the time her Hogwarts letters came, she could make secondhand clothes look just like new, duplicate her mother’s recipe for paella and San Jacobos, and had the know-how to keep a household afloat, if not the longevity and income to do so. Her father liked to joke that whatever man that was lucky enough to have her had better hope he didn’t hurt her, because Raquel would damn well take him out herself, no need for her brothers or papa to get involved.

The hat barely brushed the top of her head before she was promptly sorted into Ravenclaw, her twin brother going to Slytherin with as little hesitation on the hat’s part. She found her place among eagles, and she even looked out for other girls to make sure that they were safe from skeezy older boys. She hadn’t expected Sebastian to turn out as horrible as his friends were.

For a long time, her relationship was… pleasant. A little boring, through rose-colored glasses, all the red flags simply looked like flags. She figured that he had his reasons for disliking her traveling so much to study wandmaking, but he never said why he had issues with it. She had their son at 25, their daughter almost a year later at 26, and was forced to settle down so that she could be home with them, taking a job at Ollivanders for a short period of time. Everything began to fray at the edges, but it blew itself apart when their son was seven. Raquel’s brother had been attacked by a werewolf, a Whelan by assumption, and her niece Hensley was left comatose after the attack. Sebastian didn’t want to allow her to leave, something that infuriated Raquel. The argument ended with him leaving, kicking her and their children out into the cold.

Everything began to make sense after that. Their children, which were a gift in Raquel’s eyes, had been a ploy to keep her tied down to him, another way for him to own her. He had tried to isolate her from her family. So, Raquel did what her family always said she could if she needed. She went home.

Helping her brother and the children recover from their harrying experience took up much of the young mother’s time, as well as helping her children adjust to their new life back home with her parents. Eventually, she found a job in Rome, studying under a wandmaker there while teaching wandlore, and when it came time for her children to go to school, she was undeniably pleased when they both chose Hogwarts. She hoped that they would each find something that made them passionate about life the way wandmaking had for her, and finished out her year in Rome, settling back in England so that the kids were close to home while attending the Scottish school. To make it a little easier on her, she applied for the open wandlore position.

Full Name: Raquel Astraia Dowling
Blood Status: Squib-born Halfblood
Sex | Gender | Pronouns: designated female at birth | fluid | she/her
House/Alma Mater: Ravenclaw alumna
Years graduated: 26 years
Age | Birthday | Sun Sign: 43 | 31 March | Aries

Appearance:
Raquel likes to think of herself as the perfect meshing of her parents. Dowling genes are strong, of course, but when married with Becerra genes, something particularly beautiful was born, not just in her siblings, but in their children as well. From her father's family, she inherited her hairline, her square shaped face, and her tendency to build lean, functional muscle over anything else. Her cheeky, troublemaking grins are all Castor Dowling, down to the way her eyes crinkle at the corners. From her mother's side of the family, she inherited her hair texture and growth rate, dark eyes like black treacle, and her body shape - wider in her hips, her weight carried there after three pregnancies like her mother and grandmother before her.

She's of a multicultural background, her mother of Colombian Jewish and Nahuatl origin, while her father is of Irish descent spanning back at least a millennium, English in the last four generations. The result of that all has made for some interesting traits. Her dark brown hair shows red tones in the sun, with wild curls that more often than not requires liberal use of Sleekeazy's Hair Potion to tame it into slightly more workable -but still thick- waves. Her skin isn't porcelain or moonlight, but is very fair and lightly freckled when you're in her breathing space; when in places that she gets ample sun, she takes on quite the golden glow, her skin holding onto the sun long after it's gone. Her eyes, dark as they are, even seem to change based on what she's wearing.

Raquel was, by far, the wildest of her siblings, but especially when it came to her clothing. As a child, she was frequently without shirts, bandeau tops becoming an annoying necessity as secondary sex characteristics kicked in. In her preteen years, she began to emulate her father's punk style. Her closet filled with black, grungy clothing, the floor lined with heavy boots, and hangers lined with ratty jeans and heavily altered denim vests and jackets, both bearing patches hand sewn with dental floss. Her style evolved as she progressed into Hogwarts. Creepers with thick platform soles, fishnets, crop tops, and chokers became staples as she grew into the ability to take comfort in her femininity. Colors began to reappear in accessories, patches, and streaks of makeup; grayish-purple lipstick was a favorite, the cool color making her brown eyes explode with curious warmth.

The biggest, most notable change was her hair. From birth to age thirteen, Quel had never had so much as a trim. She slept with her hir wrapped in a silk headscarf and took meticulous care of it. Her first haircut was devastating and ciolating, her twin brother Ronaldo cutting off her thick braid with a Severing Charm that left an ugly, raised scar where her ear lobe met her jaw.
