An owl cooed softly overhead, the one sitting next to the girl watching her with large, amber eyes. He was waiting to see whether his services would be needed or whether he could return to his meal, his wings flapping occasionally before settling again. The letter sat next to her on the window’s ledge between them. It was written, neatly placed within its envelope. A page filled with words in a tidy scrawl. Its sender, however, was not so sure that it was worth being sent and a soft sigh slipped out from between her lips as it was again considered just dropping it in the common room fire. Kiska had written a half dozen other letters along the same vein this year and each had not garnered a response. Had her mother decided that not any of them were worth responding to? Were her sisters and brother keeping her busier than Kiss could realize? Had her mother forgotten that she did have another daughter away at boarding school and even just one letter would be welcome?

It had taken a long time for Kiska to realize that it was resentment that stirred every now and again in her gut. Attention was dropped easily upon her other siblings, and yet she had the feeling of being overlooked and often. It was bound to be felt from time to time in a brood of six, sure. But this particular lioness was getting more than her fair share and she didn’t know what to do about it.

Blinking to bring herself back around to the present instead of getting lost too much farther into her thoughts, the Gryffindor straightened up and set about to attaching the letter to the owl. He seemed glad to finally have a task one way or another to do and stuck his leg out for her. This drew a smile from the girl and she stroked his head lightly, watching him for just a moment. As had happened each time before, a ball of steely resolve blossomed in her chest and made the decision to send the letter off. She was doing well in her classes, even though there was some pain with Potions and Herbology in particular. She had an inkling of what she wanted to do upon graduation. She wasn’t screwing around and was taking more things seriously. It was more than could have been said last year or any of the Gryffindor’s other years at Hogwarts. Why was it, though, that the letters of admonishment came and yet nothing of praise? Or even acknowledgement of her progress would have been welcome…

The owl was off, the girl leaning in the frame of the open window as she watched him become smaller and smaller. A breeze stirred loose wisps of hair around her face, a warm breath as spring tried to stake its claim this time of year. Nothing was blooming as of yet, the trees still the stark naked of winter and the patches of bushes still just bland greenery until it came time to be splotches of vibrant color on the landscape. Midday did still cast a nice glow across the grounds and castle, the sun streaming in through a window on the opposite side of the room. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, another smile was drawn out as a smaller barn owl came to the ledge. “Are you in want of a bit of attention, fellow?” she asked him quietly, looking about for something to give him.

The young man was carrying the letter in his fingers, tapping the tips of them against the parchment as he moved towards the owlery. There was only a small spring in his step for the truth was that loneliness was starting to seep into his edges. Liam had met with it head on by visiting the older woman, Myra, in Hogsmeade, the owner of a small bakery shop that he had enjoyed visiting since he had been able to step foot into the village in third year. He letter was full of talking about the trip to his mother, with the hope that she wouldn't quite be able to see the fact that this letter was less about Kiss and their adventures together than it usually was. The lioness had seemed to disappear in the last few weeks, though the sightings of her that Liam had, she was either with classroom work or with her fellow housemate, JR.

Liam had let her be after a short owl to her, figuring that the young woman just needed some time. Instead he had filled his spare time with learning about mermaids and ghosts. The letter also contained the excitement that the eagle held for these subjects as well. Magical creatures were the lad's go to piece to learn about in the world that he could not share with his parents fully because they were muggles. It pained him slightly, but at the same time, he shared what he could with them and they appreciated that he didn't just leave them in the dark. In fact, they were excited for him and that was the piece that kept the three of them together.

His feet climbed the steps of the owlery, the soft pounding of his sneakers on the steps echoing in his ears. He released a bit of a breath, trying to calm his thoughts about the two best friends that he had ever had in the world; until JR had gone off of his rocker in fifth year. It still plagued the eagle, as much as he didn't want to admit it, wanted to pretend that he was over it. Logically, there was nothing left except a twist of emotions and anyone that knew the young man knew that he didn't like rollercoasters of emotions, he liked logical and rational.

Pushing open the door to the owlery, he was filled with the scent of the owls first - sure some would consider it dirty, but these owls were just as magical as the rest of the creatures in the wizarding world. Where in the muggle world did you see people using owls to send letters, after all? His smile widened as he saw the lioness in questions sitting with the owl, talking softly to it. Emotions rippled at his heart, but in the end, he was always happy to see his best friend. Although; today, she seemed slightly troubled, as he watched her, he spoke softly, concern lacing in his voice. "You still haven't gotten a letter back yet? Are you sure you don't want to just go visit and see what's going on? I'll go with you."

The sound of footsteps on the stairs could be heard well before the figure came in to view. The girl’s eyebrows raised, the ache in her chest that she had been combating for most of the day giving way to be a small leap. The Gryffindor and Ravenclaw hadn’t interacted much as of late and it had taken seeing him again to realize just how much it was missed. A longstanding friendship such as theirs in spite of the differences in personalities, the differences in interests, and the ups and downs that they had been through together wasn’t something that you came across very often. And through it all, it seemed that they were stronger for it. With the recent changes in her life that involved JR, Kiska could really only describe all the detail and emotion involved to one person. And, of all people, he happened to be coming to her from across the room now.

Offering a half smile that felt sad even to her own face, Kiss shook her head. “It’s probably very busy. Grandkids and all that. Couple of them by now, I think.” Of course, the Gryffindor didn’t know if any more had been added to the brood, either, since letters from home weren’t really something that she received. Blowing out a breath, trying to get rid of the bitterness in her thoughts, her gaze turned away from her best friend and instead turned back to the owl that had been next to her. He had scooted off away by now, her lapse of attention to him resulting in an equal response from the creature. Looking back to Liam, Kiss gave him a smile and reached out to squeeze his hand lightly. “How are you, though? It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to get caught up with each other.”

The ache in his heart spread all the way to the edges of his limbs, the tips of his fingers. It was hard to imagine life without Kiska Ferdenova, but it seemed that they were growing towards that every day. Of course they would never fully leave each other, but after seventh year they were bound to see each other even less, starting from the fact that even now they were seeing each other less and less. The eagle swallowed, refusing the emotion that threatened - after all, Liam didn't like where emotions were involved. The two would always be there for one another when they were needed and that was what really mattered in the end. The fact that they were growing apart, becoming closer with other people, that was just a part of life that one had to live with.

Liam made his way to his friend, where she was sitting, his shoes leaving a soft sound against the wood of the owlery floor even as the black owl that he had helped out a few months ago came to land on his shoulder. The young man was smiling despite himself; that was a part of what the owlery itself did to him, calmed him down and kept him at peace, even if there was tragedy going on in the world around him. There was no doubt that the growing distance between the lioness in front of him and the eagle hurt. The two had been friends since that very first rainstorm in the September of their first year. They had shared tons of moments since then, but never had they battled the growing apart stage as the two were now - as her focus shifted on JR. Liam presumed by this point that the two had figured out they wanted to be together in a more romantic way. All that the young man could do was pray to Merlin that she didn't get hurt the way that they both had in fifth year and that everything would work out for his two favorite Gryffindors.

His blue pearls stayed on the girl as he reached up to run his fingers along the black owl that had perched on his left shoulder, hooting softly in his ear. "Of course you can carry my letter," he replied softly to the creature. In his right hand still sat the rough edges of the folded up parchment that was going to be sent to his parents. "Can you make sure that you're not seen?" The eagle nudged the bird lightly, laughing as the owl clucked his tongue at him. "Yes, I know. You're never seen." In a few moments, the owl had the letter attached to his foot and he was off, flying out the window that was behind Kiska.

It was then that Liam moved to sit beside her, his attention and thoughts focusing on her. "I'm sorry that they're not sending you letters. I only suggested the visit so you could see them. You know I'm here for you, whatever you choose, blueeyes." That was the truth, wasn't it? Liam would always be there for Kiss, no matter what happened, no matter what distances came between them, no matter what she needed. That was just apart of their friendship; he knew that she would also do the same for him. Squeezing her fingers lightly before letting go again, he nodded, "It has been a while. We need a day to spend together. I'm doing alright." What he wanted to tell her was that there was a mermaid in the lake, that he had met a ghost, that he was continuing his studies on magical creatures and loving it, but he couldn't bring up the mermaid for sure, since he had been sworn to secrecy, the reminder of that promise still his pants pocket.
