It had been a long time since the kitchens had smelled this way when JR Zerner was the main culprit in them. The meeting with Liam had gone smoothly, as far as the lion could tell and it had reminded the young man of the days in the kitchens where Kiss had spent a lot of time begging him to teach her the secret spaghetti sauce recipe that his father used at the restaurant that the older man owned. Liam would sit on the stool and laughed at them both. He had mentioned a time or two of them bickering like an old married couple and looking back on it now, JR wondered if their friend always knew, even before they were teenagers, that one day the two Gryffindors might fall in love and be together.

Of course, they weren't together, at least not yet and the lion was slightly disappointed about this fact. The opening night of the carnival hadn't exactly gone the way that JR had hoped and he had lost the courage to be able to ask her, feeling his tongue heavy and insides shaky instead. Still, they were friends and the young man was glad for this. They even had kissed a couple of times now and therefore, his spirits were high; as though it was only a matter of time. At least he hoped. Around his feet, Åska was purring at him, happy with the fact that his owner's friend had left the kitten a bowl of milk in the corner and fed him a bit. JR smirked; it seemed that the tiny creature had a bit of a tendency to meet him in the kitchens - as it was here that JR had first met Åska, wiggling in Erik's arms.

He did not know where his friend was that day - probably with Quincy somewhere, he presumed - but later he would deliver a tub of spaghetti and garlic bread to this friend as well as Kiska and Liam. Reaching down to pet the kitten's head, JR smiled at him. He was a fond of the small creature as he was his owner. Åska purred and nipped gently at his fingers before turning away to get another drink from the bowl that he had left on the corner of the floor.

So lost in the good memories - for once, this was a rarity in itself for the Gryffindor, that JR id not hear the door of the kitchens open, as he was lost in a mix of the spices and bubbling tomato sauce mixed with smell of garlic that filled the air when he opened the oven to check on the bread. It was good to be lost in a moment like this, a memory from his childhood where he had spent hours in his father's restaurant, learning the secrets of the Italian great-grandmother that he had never known and her sauces.

Madeline had little reason to roam the lower levels of Hogwarts, and yet there was something beautifully creepy about the dungeons and the sub-levels in general, almost as if the spirits of the past were caught in between dark corners and cabinets no one used any more. She had few friends in Slytherin and Hufflepuff, therefore only hunger made her climb down all those stairs, fingers with long, black stiletto nails running over the handrail while her cat followed her like a shadow - or an exceptionally pretty and loyal fashion accessory. Bathory meowed as she twirled around Maddy’s feet once they were placed on the stones of the corridor towards the kitchen, and the girl smiled down at the giant ball of smooth, black fur for a moment before continuing her walk. One hand dug into the heavy fabric of her dress, lifting it so it would not take away the house elves’ duty to sweep the floor in the evening.

The distinct scent of garlic lured her closer towards the kitchen, stomach growling in a way that was anything but ladylike, and she placed the hand that was not holding onto her skirts on her belly, shaking her head in silent scolding. Then, Madeline tickled the pear with her long fingernails before entering the room where the scent intensified even more. Strangely enough, the house elves were not in charge of it, but a tall young man she vaguely remembered to be in Gryffindor, without necessarily knowing his name. With a soft smile and a majestic nod, she greeted him, before walking closer towards the herd, Bathory behind her meowing even louder as the cat’s senses were attacked by the promise of food as well. Maddy’s stomach decided to groan just a little louder, but she ignored it for the sake of reaching for one of the pot lids, curiously lifting it and gazing inside.

“What are you cooking?” she asked bluntly, offering her sweetest smile to the boy, dark-painted lips twisting just for him while her fingers were still holding onto the lid. The lion was just opening the oven, and the scent of garlic wavered through the kitchen towards Maddy, making her lick her lips like the cat that could already smell the cream. “Is this garlic bread? Oh, can I try it, please?” Finally, she placed the lid back on the pot and walked closer towards the cook in charge, Bathory rubbing her head against the girl’s long legs in the process.

At home, the food was always acceptable - and no one could really complain about the buffets at Hogwarts, but Maddy often fell victim to Helena’s cooking skills, and those were nothing but absolutely gruesome. Salmon on cake was only one of the many monstrosities her older sister had tried to feed her, but nothing could beat garlic bread and its tempting scents. Who cared about garlic breath afterwards it was not like she was going to kiss anyone today, anyway. Lifting her skirts slightly, the girl sat down on the nearest chair, batting her mascara-clad lashes at the boy.

There had been a time when the lion was a young child, when he had spent hours in the kitchens of a muggle restaurant that was named Junior's Home. Pictures had lined the walls of the restaurant that led to the bathroom that told the tale of the boy that was growing up from the time that he was a small child until however old the boy was at the time. The restaurant was named for JR, a place that his muggle father had always wanted his son to be able to come home to no matter what, especially after they had found out that the boy was a wizard. For the first few years of Hogwarts it had been perfect, coming home each summer to the smells that wafted through the restaurant and now the kitchens. The thoughts and the feelings of this day brought back those good memories. The art of cooking must've stuck with the young man for on this day, years after his father had passed away and that restaurant was no longer in existence, JR could remember that the smells of the sauce were exactly the same.

His green eyes glanced up at the newcomer to the kitchens and the cat that followed, giving a polite smile as she examined what he was doing. The sauce was almost finished, the noddles were just about done and he was pulling the garlic bread out of the stove with a blue hot mitt carefully. Putting the pan on top of the counter that were layered with other oven mitts, he looked back to the girl that had come in. "Spaghetti with sauce and garlic bread," he responded, eyes flickering over to the small kitten in the corner that was making a soft noise, not terribly pleased with the newcomers. "Grab a seat, it'll all be ready in a few moments." There was no reason not to share what he had made; the lion had been cooking for a small army, just the way that he had been taught to as a young child. Leftovers could be shared with friends or anyone that wanted some. It was just soothing to be cooking in the first place without the memories plaguing him into panic attacks. Some days were just easier than others.

He turned away, whistling softly as he moved about the kitchen, getting plates and silverware for the both of them as Åska came to rub up against his legs and purr softly, wanting the attention of the young man. "I know, I know. You ate and now you want my pocket to sleep in. Erik's going to kill me cause you follow me everywhere." His friend's kitten had taken quite the liking to JR, even if neither of the boys really knew why. Still, it was nice that the animal wanted to spend time with him. The truth was that the young man had not thought about getting another pet since losing either his father or his black lab, Jack, on that fateful day some odd years ago.

"I'm JR, by the way," he glanced back over at the girl that was now with him. giving another nod. "I don't promise this is the best food you've ever had, but it'll at least keep you full till breakfast. Feel free to have as much as you want. Or as little as you want. Or whatever." Apparently, rambling was on the menu for this day as well, as the lion shifted to spoon them both platefuls of noodles and then sauce and garlic bread, bringing to the island counter both heaping plates. "Here you are."

It did not happen all too often that someone offered Madeline food without the intention to actually poison her, and her eyeliner-framed eyes wandered towards the handsome and tall young man, smiling at him with her dark lips. “You must be a seer, knowing my favourite dishes just like that,” she teased him, and a stiletto nail rain over his forearm as she passed him on her way towards the table, skirts swishing over the floor in the process. Bathory followed, yet not without curiously staring at the kitten and tentatively meowing at the fat ball of fur. Maddy fought with her dress for a moment, taking her time to rearrange the skirts until she could sit down on the rather small wooden chair beside the table. Dresses like hers were meant to be worn in a ballroom and not in a kitchen, yet the nature of Madeline Poe’s days was fickle, surprising turns happening too often to stick to a certain routine or pattern she could follow every day.

Once she was seated, she snapped her fingers at her cat, and Bathory finally drew her yellow eyes away from the kitten and followed her owner, allowing the girl to pick her up and place her on her lap. The best fashion accessory a girl could have were cat hairs after all, and Maddy was never bothered by the way they seemed to litter every single dress and skirt she owned. It had always been this way, as pets were always welcome in the Poe family. Closing her eyes, she inhaled the scents of the food that was being prepared once more, iridescent eyes settling on the boy who was cooking. Maybe she should add cook to her list of boys that would be worth to date, right after dead boys and vampires – who were dead in a way, too, yet not the same. No one ever said that her standards were high when it came to pretty boys – fluffy hair like the one Teddy Faust had was a big plus, or the fashion sense of Sindre Nilsson. If one would combine it with the cooking skills of this gentleman, Madeline was sure her dream boy would be the result of all this.

Patiently, the eagle waited, her legs crossed underneath her skirt and her hands wrapped around the thick body of her cat, petting Bathory’s fur until the plate was placed in front of her. She could smell the herbs in the sauce and the thick, rich aroma of the garlic bread. It made her mouth water and it even made her forget about her always so carefully applied lipstick that would mostlikely not resist the grease and the butter in the food she had been given. “Is there any reason you prepare a small feast, or were you just bored?” the blonde girl asked curiously, batting her lashes at the boy. “Oh, I did not get your name!” Playing innocent was a trick most Poe children knew all too well, and carefully, she placed her pet on the chair beside her before reaching for a fork to dip it into the noodles.

Once more, Madeline’s gaze wandered towards the kitten that was still meowing in quite protest, frowning at the familiar, grey cat that was exceptionally fat and fluffy for an animal of that size. “This isn’t yours, now is it? I have seen him in the Ravenclaw tower,” she explained, pointing the tines of her fork at the kitten and looking back to the chef that had been hiding his skills from her for all those years, as it seemed. Rolling some noodles onto her fork, she took a first bite, a soft moan escaping her black lips as her features twisted in the most satisfied ways, She should taste the herbs, the vegetables, the consistence of the noodles and the effort that had been put into the dish – and in that moment, it was easy to forget all her manners to shove another forkful of perfect food into her mouth. “Mhhhhhhhh.”

There was something calming about the warmth that the kitchen had that night, the homey smells that were lingering through the air as the lion cooked the recipes that had been passed down to him and were usually safely tucked away in a part of his trunk in the form of letters from his father when he had been twelve or so. It had been Kiss that had bugged him enough to ask for the recipes when they were kids and a part of the young man would forever would be grateful that she had because otherwise, they would've been lost forever.

For now, the crinkled papers were on the side of the island where the girl was sitting. Later they would be tucked carefully back into the envelope and put back into his trunk. JR knew that he should rewrite the recipe onto cards or something of the sort, but there was something that was nice about reading his father's handwriting that he hadn't yet put his finger on. "I'm not sure about seer," he replied, looking up from the papers that his green eyes had drifted to when he was thinking about the past for a moment. "But I've been told that spaghetti is one dish that everyone loves." It had been one of Joe Zerner's favorite things to say at the restaurant - but the way that JR phrased it made it so that there was no questions about his family in the process.

After setting both the plates down, rather than starting his own meal, JR shifted to reach for Åska, the kitten purring softly as he placed him in his sweatshirt pocket - the newest place that kittens loved to cuddle against him. Shifting to pull a stool closer, JR kept one hand on the body of the kitten before he was sure that Åska was safe and sound, ready to go to sleep as he hate with his free hand. "You're right, he replied. "He really belongs to a friend of mine, but Åska seems to have taken a liking to me." His fingers brushed over the kitten's head that was purring softly in his pocket, looking to his companion's cat in the chair beside her. "It looks like you're pretty fond of cats as well."

His attention was drawn back to their meal as it seemed that the girl that was trying his dish approved and it made the young man have a certain amount of pride within his chest, a smile curling on his lips as he picked up his own utensil to try the steaming food. His fingers twirled the noodles around his fork as the lion learned in, blew on them and then took the bite into his mouth, overcome by the warm flavors that seeped into his tongue, spices and herbs that seemed to send him back to when he was seven years old and begging for the meal three times a week. His eyes closed and for the moment, all was good in the world for JR.

Iridescent eyes that looked so much brighter than they were thanks to the thick lines of kajal Madeline always drew around them settled on the taller boy’s face as she fixed her skirts and smiled at him. “It would be an interesting study to find someone who despises spaghetti. Eventually, it would take a traumatic experience to dislike them,” she mused with a smile, while her finger drew invisible lines onto the rough surface of the wooden table she was sitting on. She thought of Edgar and his black bag, and of the book about Halloween parties she used to have, full of advice, recipes and tricks to create the perfect party. There had been a page about filling a box with creepy objects, among them a cold and yet cooked spaghetti to imitate worms. Sensitive as the young Poe girl was, she did not mention the resemblance of worms and spaghettis to the boy, as she did not want to ruin his own appetite for the dishes he had cooked with so much care.

She had heard about the therapeutic effects of cooking and baking, although Maddy herself found more comfort in sewing or digging her hands into wet soil while planting and repotting plants in the greenhouses or in their wild-growing garden back at home. But the girl knew that it was not up to her to ask for the reasons why the young man had put so much effort into all of this - and why would she, given it was beneficial for both of them? This dish was worth to ruin her lipstick with, and she gave him a tomato-stained smile over her plate while she kept eating, waving her fork above the plate while she chewed. Listening was easier in this case, given she wanted to focus on the explosions on her tastebuds. Where could she hire this boy? He cooked like a God, and she needed more days filled with spaghetti as perfect as those, even though she was not sure that - even hypothetically - she could keep the boy around as her own, personal master chef.

The words made her chuckle. It was true that she was very fond of cats, yet coincidence was clearly playing a trick on the two of them, and she rolled another few noodles onto her fork while looking at the boy. “You would not believe it, but my cat had kittens lately. That is Bathory, by the way,” Madeline introduced the majestic pet by her side, before focusing on the boy again. “If you think that kittens take a liking at you, wouldn’t you enjoy having one for yourself?” It had been a rather spontaneous thought, one of those that raced through her mind before she even had the chance to think all of this through. But someone who cooked such precious food could not be harmful towards a cat - and it showed in the way he was handling the tiny, fat kitten of his friend, too.

Suddenly remembering her manners, Maddy placed the fork beside her plate and offered the boy her hand. “How rude of me. Madeline Poe, a pleasure to meet you,” she said in a grave and overly dramatic voice, making sure he was going to remember her name later. A perfectly painted eyebrow was raised at the boy, waiting for him to introduce herself while she yearned to shovel more spaghetti into her mouth once these pleasantries would be exchanged.

The heritage of the bot that was cooking tonight was complicated at best, JR knew. His father's grandmother had been Italian, which was where this recipe had come at one point in time, though his father had spent most of his life growing up in America. The family had moved to London when Joe Zerner was a teenager and that was were the man had started his restaurant when JR was six. Most of the details were fuzy to the young man and now he wished that he had paid more attention to his father when Joe had been trying to explain things, but what fourteen year old cared about where they came from? Eventually it would be sad that that JR couldn't recall the details of his heritage, but what he was left with was small things - like some letters from his father that included recipes.

JR snorted softly as the girl spoke - the idea that there were people out there that did not like spaghetti was insane, something that Joe had also thought as he based most of his restaurant around spaghetti dishes. It was not an exclusive Italian restaurant, but the spaghetti became what muggles knew the place for anyways. To JR, it had been the place where his childhood was - like a second home, true to the name Junior's Home. "Impossible. Everyone loves spaghetti. Even if the preferences for different sauces are there."

Fingers continued to rub over the small kitten in his pocket with the hand that was not putting noodles and sauce into his mouth via the fork in his hand. A small smile came as JR looked back to the young woman across the table from him. "I dunno. I mean, it would be great; but that's so much more to having a kitten than just feeding it, right?" His heart pounded a little faster at the thought, his insides twisting - at one point, he had been the owner of a black lab, but like his father and the restaurant, Jack too, was gone to the young man forever.

JR dropped the fork to grab at a napkin in the middle of the table, wiping his face clean of the saucy remains that were sure to be there. His eyebrows lifted in realization that he did not yet know the young woman's name, even if he might've introduced himself prior. "I'm JR Zerner," he responded, giving her another smile as the napkin was put next to his plate. His brow twitched in recognition of the last name, but he decided not to comment on it. It had been a long time since a primary school teacher had talked about Edgar Allen Poe. "Glad you could join me tonight. I clearly made way too much, you know?"

“Mhhhhh,” Madeline made once more, as such a divine food clearly robbed her of all her powers to act like a decent person in front of a handsome young man. Who would have thought she was so easily charmed? And there she had thought all her tastebuds had died already thanks to Helena’s gruesome creations. Fortunately, she had been wrong, and could still taste the awesomeness of these spaghetti. Only for the garlic bread she placed her fork aside, soundly biting in it and chewing while she stared at the boy across the table, absently brushing crumbs from her dress in the process. “To be entirely honest,” she started in between two bites, “I do prefer a carbonara sauce. But now that I have tasted this one, I might reconsider my decisions. Say, do you cook here often? I might have grown addicted to this, it is so delicious!” While Maddy’s words might sound like an exaggeration, she meant every single one of them, smiling at the boy before carefully dabbing sauce from the corner of her mouth - without ruining her lipstick, of course.

A boy who could cook wonderful meals and enjoyed talking about cats - what more could Madeline ask for in this moment? She was quite content with herself, finishing the bread before she continued with the spaghetti. Why did one have a corset when it was not used for keeping this body in shape, right? Bathory jumped on the stool beside Madeline’s, then on the table and carelessly walked past the plates before dropping down beside JR’s, yellow eyes staring at the kitten in his pocket before she meowed, pawing at the tiny ball of fur. “Looks like she wants to play. I am sure she won’t hurt him, given she has her kittens in my dorm,” Maddy said in a soothing tone - convinced about her own words, as Bathory had never been violent in any ways. Distant, yes, but never violent.

“Of course there is more to it. You need to clean the litter and feed it, but cats give so much back that it is definitely worth the effort. If you would like one - I still have some that are not claimed, and I am sure one of them would love to be yours,” Maddy almost purred in between eating. She did not really have a system to pick owners for the kittens, but her gut feeling rarely betrayed her, so she decided to trust it right now as well. Finally, the boy shared his name with her as well, and she repeated it - “JR Zener” - trying it like wine on her tongue before she smiled at him once more, dark lips parting to reveal teeth that could be whiter than they were. “So tell me, JR, do you want a kitten?”

Madeline was not one of these girls who were scared of eating in front of people, generously helping herself to a second serving of both garlic bread and noodles with sauce. “Too much? Do not worry, I shall help you finishing all of this. It is perfect. You are the living, breathing proof that the way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach,” Maddy exclaimed, batting her lashes at JR before she continued eating these perfect dishes. Who knew when she would be spoiled like this next time? There was nothing wrong with meals at Hogwarts, yet she was never as fond of them as she was of the food her mother prepared at home. She could not wait for autumn, when pumpkin soup with pumpkin seeds would be served in one of the massive pumpkins they grew in their garden.

JR knew that he was not overly good with compliments, so when the repeated words started to flow from the girl's lips, his neck twinged the slightest bit of pink and the young man could only hope that his companion for the night didn't notice too much. Cooking was not something that he was overly skilled at - but he did know how to follow recipes and this dish in particular was one that was easy because he had made it before. It wasn't trying something new; it was revisiting the past in a way that the young man hadn't been able to bring himself to do in a long time and sharing the experience with Madeline was making it easier - his thoughts weren't drifting to his deceased father more than they had to and he could focus on something else than memories flooding him.

It also helped that the girl was so intent on asking him about having a kitten of his own - perhaps it was because she wanted to ensure that the kittens that her cat had would have new owners and this made the young man pause for a moment, resting his fork down on his plate as he stared down at his friend's kitten that was curiously tilting his head at the bigger cat, but still safely tucked into the sweatshirt pocket. A smile rippled across his features as JR allowed himself to think of it for a moment - it would be something that could make him happy, a pet to take care of. It certainly seemed that his friends all had cats that loved him. Or at least loved the sweatshirt pocket that he tended to carry them in.

His piercing green eyes moved upwards again, taking in the sight of the young woman across the table still eating the plateful of spaghetti. "I would like that," he admitted, resting back on his stool a little. Not to tip, but the feeling inside of his stomach would inevitably stop him from eating any more of the meal that they were having - nervousness and apprehension was already starting to naw at him. What exactly had he just agreed to? Having a kitten? Didn't terrible things happen to those that JR cared about? It was a thought that came in like a crashing wave, something that the young man didn't want to deal with and quickly he shoved it aside again. Things were better now, he didn't have to deal with those thoughts and ideas anymore.

To calm himself, he repeatedly brushed his friends through the fur of the kitten that was purring softly in his throat. JR focused on the next words that came and he offered her a small smile, though it felt slightly fake. Hoping that the young woman didn't notice, he laughed softly, replying, "Feel free to take as much back as you want for leftovers as well. I intend to pack some up for my friends as well."
