While other people dreamed of having a grandiose childhood, such as being cursed by an evil snake-like villain curse or losing both your parents at birth, Alston Byrne was more than content with his life. He grew up with relatively normal parents compared to most of the sorry lot at Hogwarts. One just had to take a look at the Elias Deveaux kid that was two years younger than him to realize that. That kid looked like he had his favorite toy stolen when he was a kid and never quite recovered from the trauma. It was a pity because the kid looked like he had a lot of potential to become someone great, like a fellow prankster. Alas the kid would always glare at Alston like he was scum on earth. The Slytherin scoffed at such a preposterous statement. He was everything good in the world. That kid ought to have been happy that he was in the same house as the great Alston Byrne.

Well, Alston was as normal as he could have hoped. His father was a science fiction and fantasy novelist and might he add, a bestselling science fiction and fantasy novelist. It had been a fact that the sixth-year was openly proud of and he made sure his father knew he was proud. His mother, on the other hand, was a bit bizarre. She was actually one of the few people that Alston did not dare prank because she could be even more of a troll herself. Alston did not fancy being tricked by his own mother. It had happened far too many times for the boy to count, and he was certainly a quick learner.

It was currently a good day. It was Saturday morning, which meant that there would be no classes today unless the world suddenly turned upside thing, which was very possible considering how man magical beings were around. Alston bounced on his heels as he walked across the hallway, wondering when it would be the right time to announce his new plan to the world. Looking outside the window, he figured maybe might not be the best time. People might not have accepted his ideas while his ideas were still in the planning stage. It was best to let them in on it once he was almost done.

Besides, it was time for his favorite activity! Finding his victims and torturing them. Oh, did he say that? He meant finding his beloved peers and then potentially bonding over a traumatic experience together. Hmm. That didn't sound too appealing. Maybe he needed to rephrase it? He wanted to find someone else to spend the day with because he was bored. Yes, this sounded much better. He was bored. Obviously. He wasn't the type to spend the day indoors while the sun was shining so brightly outside.

Craning his neck forward, he stared at the students passing by in the hallway. Catching sight of one particular Ravenclaw student, his lips curved upward in a familiar mischievous grin. His eyes lit with excitement as he sauntered from his spot near the window to the younger girl. Standing in front of her, he greeted her with a mock bow. “All hail the lovely Renée, the next best thing since toothpaste was invented.”

On the weekends, Renée spent the majority of her time finishing her homework or getting ahead in her studies. Sometimes she’d attend special functions at the school to meet other students. When she had free time though, she spent her time pouring over textbooks and documents about mysterious draughts and fantastical concoctions. Looking at her notes, one might’ve thought she was looking for a magical panacea or perhaps the Fountain of Youth itself. To be more precise, she was searching for El Dorado. Today’s adventures into the unknown involved a hard to brew but rather famous potion, and she was on her way to the library to check out a more specialized textbook about it.

The studious girl was speeding down the hallway with a large leather-bound textbook hovering in front of her. Upon hearing her name called she stopped with a start and the book snapped shut before falling with an ungraceful thud onto the stone floor, nearly landing on Alston’s toes.

“Ah, it’s you,” she muttered, acknowledging the boy with a scowl. With a flick of her wand the heavy textbook was tucked safely under her arm. She leaned toward him and peered carefully at his teeth while that ridiculous grin was still plastered all over his face. “And you look like you could use some toothpaste. Been drinking too much coffee perhaps?”

As if by reflex Renée withdrew immediately about a foot from the boy and shifted the book so it was between her and Alston. Knowing his habits, being at close proximity for an extended period of time was exceedingly dangerous. Her eyes glared at him with suspicion from underneath her creased brows.

It was then that she remembered today’s mission. Her expression relaxed as she folded her arms thoughtfully and asked, “Actually, maybe you’ll know?”

Renée tapped the book with her wand and it flipped to the page she had been reading. The passage concerned Polyjuice Potion, and included details on the specific ingredients it required and how to find them. “I’ve been trying to figure out whether isolated red blood cells could be used to make Polyjuice Potion. All of the ingredients they suggested, like hair, and dandruff, and toenail clippings,” here she shuddered, “seem to contain the target’s DNA. But red blood cells by themselves don’t have DNA in them.”

She closed the book and lightly smacked Alston’s arm with it. “Say hypothetically that the Minister of Magic went to Mungo’s to get blood work done. What’s to prevent someone from swiping the centrifuged sample and using it for some devious purpose? This could be a real problem Alston.”

When Alston reunited with his lovely victim at Hogwarts, he originally only planned to say hi and be on his merry way. After all, Renée was her own person and the two of them were not even in the same year or house. It felt a bit too troublesome to be chasing after this particular victim because there would be many ways for her to avoid being seen by him.

But how he could resist? For example, he knew how many girls had hearts in their eyes towards the guy they liked. This witch was a very strange girl and seemed only to have money signs in her eyes. Every time she spoke, it was always about profit or possible business ventures. The Irish boy had a suspicion that Renée used her free time to think only about ways to expand her family business. He wasn't exactly sure what her family business was about. Then again, he had never cared enough to ask, not that she would tell him anyway. She was a bit suspicious about his personality at this point. He supposed that was fair, considering he basically lied to her the moment they met.

It had been many summers ago at Stonehenge when the boy decided it would be a good idea to find a random Muggle and tell her that she was a Changeling who had been switched at birth by her fae parents. Needless to say, once his parents found out, they were not happy. He spent two months being grounded and stuck in his parents' bookstore. He was not allowed to roam outside, which was something he lived to do. He was bored enough to reorganize the entire bookstore. That only earned him an extra week of punishment, so he didn't do it again.

“Ah, tis me, sweet Renée,” he said, ignoring her comment about the state of his teeth. He spent at least five minutes brushing his teeth everyday so there was certainly nothing wrong with those pearly whites! The boy was about to lean over so that his face would be inches away from Renée's face, but unfortunately, the girl looked like she had caught on and placed a book in-between them. Alston frowned. Well, she was being no fun like usual, but at least her personality was amusing enough to entertain him.

“The fae knows everything, but there's always a cost involved if you want to know my answer,” he said with a twinkle in his eyes. Despite his attempt to remain in character, he couldn't help but chuckle when the girl revealed what she was thinking about this time around. As he suspected, it was some far-fetched idea that no one else but people with Muggle blood would understand. And even then, he considered it to be far-fetched, but it was cute.

“Red blood cells don't have nuclei or something like that, right?” he asked, actually giving serious consideration to her words. The witch was probably one of the few he did that to though. “Wow, I never really thought about that since I figured most people wouldn't have learned about biology considering how that's a high school course...or was it middle school? I'm a halfblood, so you'll have to pardon my ignorance, my adorable little Muggleborn.”

“Ow, watch where you're hitting that thing. You could have taken my eye out,” he said, despite the fact that the book was nowhere close to his face. Renée was shorter than him after all, so she couldn't even reach his face if she tried. He wrinkled his nose. “Um, what's to stop someone from going to the Minister of Magic's house and swiping a few strands of hair from his comb...unless, of course he's already bald.” He laughed and patted her on her head, “So, how's your day been going besides the usual crazy idea? You up for a treasure hunt?”

Muggleborn. A shadow passed over Renée’s face when the simple word reached her ears. In the wizarding world all it referred to was a witch or wizard who was born to Muggle parents. Yet during her first years at Hogwarts, the word was often twisted into nastier versions and hurled at almost every Muggleborn child including her. As a child she had been bookish and disinterested, and her classmates saw her as a nerd and a loner. That was nothing to her, for most of her childhood she had grown up as the only child of her family. Books were her friends and the quietude that came with loneliness was familiar and even welcoming. She attributed the insults as jealousy of her family’s wealth and thought nothing of them.

Then the day came when she heard that word. Mudblood. Quite a few years ago, one of her classmates had directed it at her unprovoked, although he was surrounded by a few of his friends. She knew the context and what it meant, as the kinder older Muggleborn eagles had warned her about it when she first entered Hogwarts. That word was an insult to her parents and to her noble name. One look at the snickering gang of boys and her conclusion was that the perpetrator had probably been dared to say it. No matter. A silver rose may dance under a glimmering light, but metal holds no mercy for its victims. A single cast of the Jelly-Legs Jinx was all Renée needed, and the rest of the punishment was carried out by her fists and kicks. She had sent 3 of the offenders to the infirmary and the last had crawled away in terror. Of course, she had been reprimanded for the outburst and caused her House to lose a few points, but it had been worth it. No one else dared to even speak of blood-related topics around her.

To Renée, it made no difference if one was a Muggleborn or pureblood or a mix of the two. She saw magic as something that made an individual unique, like an unusual hair color or having pointed ears. After all, Muggles and witches and wizards all had the same problems. Going gray, getting cheated on, tripping over the sidewalk, getting harped on by their parents, the list goes on. They were all basically human.

Alston of course, didn’t mean the term in any way offensive whatsoever. Her younger years were bygone days, but there was a fierceness in her usually aloof hazel eyes. Upon hearing Alston’s response to her earlier question, she blinked and turned her gaze. In an instant, the ferocity disappeared from her eyes and was replaced by a pensive stare. “Of course,” she repeated the phrase twice. Looking up at Alston once again, she said, “No nuclei, no DNA.” A lamenting sigh escaped from the girl as she hung her head. “I’d love to be able to test this but Polyjuice Potion would take awhile to brew. So much for that idea.”

“You make an excellent point, Alston,” conceded Renée. She frowned visibly. The Slytherin boy had a way of finding the end of the string that unravelled the yarn ball that was composed of her convoluted ideas twisted around what-ifs that were wrapped around other what-ifs that had been founded upon hypothetical situations and intermeshed with outlandish suppositions entwined with other stray suggestions. There was no way she’d ever compare him to Alexander the Great however.

“Aside from the earlier conundrum, it’s a weekend, the sun is out, and the books are musty. It’s going rather well. I hope it's going well for you?” Renée shifted the book in her arms so it would pinch her skin less. At the mention of the word “treasure” Renée’s expression did not change at all. Her long light brown eyelashes didn’t flutter, her hazel eyes didn’t sparkle from excitement, and she didn’t lean forward in anticipation of what would follow next. Though all was calm on the surface, inside her mind troops were being mobilized for adventure. She was already thinking of supplies she might need and whether she’d have time later to read the next Charms chapter in advance. To the query Renée simply responded with, “What kind of treasure are we talking about?”

Alston failed to notice the change in Renée's expression at his utterance of the word “Muggleborn.” Instead, his smile continued to sit on his face, as if nothing chilly had transpired between them. While Alston's father was a Muggle, his mother had been a witch. For a little while, he did not know of his origins, but unlike Renée, he found out very quickly that he was a wizard. Being exposed to the world at a much younger age made all the difference. He grew to understand the rules of the wizarding rule quick enough for he was a fast learner. Whether or not he agreed with the rules were an entirely different story together. Just because the boy was halfblood did not mean he would skate by unharmed. He lived in Slytherin, the house that valued blood purity the most. Alston dealt with subtle jibs and outright insults for the past six years of his life, but he had never let the comments get into his mind. While the words hurt, that was exactly what they were, words. He never found the need to confront someone over a petty insult. Though, it may have been his thick skin. Regardless of whether or not he was seen as a half-breed, Alston could really care less. For the most part, his parents were mostly normal and taught him to look past matters concerning blood.

“You're able to brew a Polyjuice Potion? Maybe you should be telling the Potions professor instead of me that. I'm sure you'll get extra points,” said Alston with a cheeky grin. When the eagle agreed with his point, Alston's grin grew even more. His ego, which was already large enough to fill the entire castle, probably grew even more too, if that was possible. “When do I ever make anything less than an excellent point?”

In English please, smart girl of Ravenclaw,
Your big words confuse me like no other.

“If you continue to confuse me, we might just have to converse in rhymes and iambic pentameter,” he said in a sing-song voice, which was he often used before he broke out in song. It was a threat if anything to get her to relax. “Treasure that will make even you happy,” promised Alston. In truth, he had no idea where the two of them would be going. He was just bored, but despite his views on keeping to a strict prankster to victim relationship with his “friends”, he gave her a curious look. “You aren't getting bullied, right?”

"Who said anything about being able to brew Polyjuice? That takes months of prep work and watching a cauldron stew for days on end." The girl lightly patted the book she had in her hands. "I was just doing some research on the potion after another book I was reading mentioned it. But now that it's done..." Renée set the book upright upon the floor. She gave the book a light tap on the spine with her wand and said "Reditus". Instantly a pair of stubby black legs sprouted from underneath the book. The tome then sagged and the little legs wobbled desperately to keep the book upright. "Oh dear," muttered Renée. She lifted some of the weight of the book to give the legs a chance to find their footing. Once the legs straightened up again, they took off in a mad dash towards the library.

The moment the teasing soprano notes of Alston's sing-song voice reached her ears, Renée's instinct was to run quickly after the book she had just sent off. "Rhyme schemes won't be necessary," the girl said quickly. "Bullied? Hardly anyone approaches me, so bullying's the least of my problems." The laugh that came afterward sounded hollow. If Renée had any problems, it was that she was lonely. If she found something interesting to share, there was no one to share it with. While books could answer her questions, they couldn’t hold conversations.

Renée frowned skeptically when Alston mentioned the word "treasure" again. After all, most of the time, where x marks the spot, the treasure is not. Gold or not, Alston's ideas usually meant that laughs were involved. "If it's you, at least it's guaranteed to be exciting." The Ravenclaw shrugged her shoulders as she said this. So much for Charms homework. "Where are heading this time?"
